Deadly Cobra Missing

1 Bronx Zoo Loses Egyptian Cobra

A deadly Egyptian cobra is somewhere yet to be found at the Bronx Zoo, reports CNN. Zoo officials think that the cobra, commonly found in North Africa, is still somewhere inside a nonpublic, isolated area of the reptile house, which has been secured and closed to the public. They say that the snake hates open spaces. The Egyptian cobra, which can kill a person with its venom in 15 minutes or a fully grown elephant in three hours, was housed inside an off-exhibit enclosure. The cobra, 20 inches long, can cause paralysis and death from respiratory failure. Zoo officials and the public are probably looking forward to breathing a sigh of relief once the naughty snake is found.

Incorrect Labels Pose Risk

3 Citalopram, Finasteride Recall for Mislabeling

Bottles labeled as Citalopram lot number FI0510058-A may actually contain Finasteride, says Greenstone LLC, who announced a voluntary recall at the patient level. Medicines with the lot number FI0510058-A, including Citalopram 10mg Tablets (100-count bottle) and Finasteride 5mg Tablets (90-count bottle), should be returned to the pharmacy. Citalopram is used to treat depression, and Finasteride is taken for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Pregnant women who take Finasteride risk experiencing side effects, including abnormalities to the external genitalia of a developing male fetus. Citalopram may be dangerous to patients taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or pimozide.

Special Concern for Diabetics

4 Nicotine Increases Blood Sugar Levels

Preliminary results from experiments in which different amounts of nicotine were added to red blood cells (RBCs) and glucose found a direct correlation between the amount of nicotine and an increase the percentage of RBCs with glucose bound to them known as hemoglobin A1C (Hb A1C). Previous research has shown that diabetics who smoke are at an increased risk of complications but this is the first study to show which compounds might cause this. The lowest and highest dose of nicotine raised HbA1C by 8.8 percent and 34.5 percent, respectively. Researchers do not believe that nicotine replacement products will do any harm in the short term but these results do provide some insight into why diabetics should not smoke. Researchers do want to stress that everyone should try and kick the habit.

Asthma Drug Fights Amyloid

5 Asthma Drug Zileuton Might Help Manage Alzheimer’s

Researchers have discovered that Zileuton, a drug used to treat asthma inhibits an enzyme called 5-lipoxygenase which controls the secretion of another enzyme, gamma secretase which is involved in making amyloid beta which accumulates in the brains of people with Alzheimers and kills neurons. Studies in mice showed that blocking 5-lipoxygenase lowered the levels of gamma secretase and resulted in a 50 percent reduction in the accumulation of amyloid plaques in the brain. Gamma secretase can be directly and completely inhibited but diseases such as cancer have been linked to doing that. Zileuton indirectly inhibits its expression while allowing enough of the enzyme to be produced. The drug has already been approved by the FDA, so human clinical trials could begin shortly.

New Drugs May Reverse Processes

6 Acute Myeloid Leukemia Linked to Three Mutations

Researchers have found three mutations are linked to acute myeloid leukemia (AML), which can be fatal within weeks of developing the disease. With AML, an increased number of immature white blood cells are made and prematurely pushed out of the bone marrow into circulation. They cannot fight off infections and fewer red blood cells are produced by the bone marrow so less oxygen is transported throughout the body. The gene most commonly mutated in AML is Npm1 and when it turned on, the renewability of the white blood cells increases. Other mutations studied in mice found that the two other mutations linked to this cancer alter cell division and growth and the other changes the environment of the cell. Hopefully with this knowledge, drugs that target these mutations can be developed.

5 Amino Acids Raise Risk 5 Fold

7 Amino Acid Test May Detect Type 2 Diabetes Early

Researchers have found that a test that looks at the levels of five amino acids in the blood were able to determine which people went on to develop type 2 diabetes. Those that had the highest levels of amino acids were five times more likely to develop the disease within 12 years after the study. It is known that type 2 diabetes can be staved off or even prevented by adopting a healthier lifestyle. Currently the only way to screen people is to watch a person’s weight and their blood sugar levels. Two thousand and twenty-two people volunteered to be tested and it detected the 201 who at risk years before they became symptomatic and became diabetic. The hope is that by diagnosing people early, complications such as blindness, heart disease, kidney failure and amputation can be avoided.

BreAst Density As a Marker

8 Drugs May Prevent Breast Cancer in High Risk Women

An international panel of cancer experts believe that drugs such as tamoxifen and raloxifene should be given to women at high risk for developing breast cancer. They also believe that breast density should be the “marker” for risk because studies have shown that women that have breast tissue density of over 75 percent are four times more likely to develop the disease than patients who have mostly non-dense tissue. Tamoxifen has been shown to reduce breast density which in turn reduces the risk of breast cancer. It is important the marker determines who will benefit the most from chemoprevention because there are serious side effects that can occur with tamoxifen such as uterine cancer, blood clots and stroke.
