Hopes to Meet Oprah

1 Woman Grows Fingernails for 22 Years

An Atlanta woman, Jazz Ison Sinkfield, has been growing her nails for 22 years and hopes her fingernails, the longest of which is 24 inches, will help her become famous and meet Oprah Winfrey, she tells news station WTSP. "One day, I want to meet Oprah," she says. "And a lot of more celebrities. And I just want them to hear my story." Sinkfield’s monthly nail maintenance entails a five hour appointment with her manicurist to the tune of $250. "They tangle up," but "there isn't anything that I can't do. The only thing I can't do is, I cannot tie shoes," says Sinkfield, who adds that she can’t type on a computer or go bowling. Sinkfield explains her nails as a gift. "They're a gift, and I can say, a talent too because it's something that everyone cannot do."

No Shadow Today!

2 Groundhog Predicts Spring Will Be Early

Those tired of all the fallen snow may get a break if Punxsutawney Phil is correct in his prediction of an early spring. The famous groundhog made his 125th weather forecast around dawn at Gobbler's Knob, reports CBS News. Conditions were icy and muddy at the site in Pennsylvania, but thousands still showed for the prediction. This year, Punxsutawney Phil didn't see his shadow. The famous rodent has seen his shadow 98 times since 1887, and he's missed his shadow 15 times not counting today. The tradition may be traced back to German superstition, notes CBS News, also reporting that the handlers, Punxsutawney Groundhog Club's Inner Circle, "concoct the forecasts."

High Temps Good for Roasting

3 Roasting Process Key to Coffee's Health Benefits

The secret behind coffee's antioxidant benefits can be found by looking at the roasting process, not the caffeine content or the chlorogenic acid as previous studies have suggested, claim food scientists from the University of British Columbia. The research, to be published in Food Research International, shows that antioxidants in dark roasted coffee brew extracts come from green beans browning under high temperatures. Lead author Yazheng Liu and co-author David Kitts say that the complex mixture of chemical compounds produced is referred to as "Maillard reaction," named after the French chemist who studied how heat affects carbs, protein and sugars in food. "We have yet to fully decipher all the complex compounds in roasted coffee beans. We only know the tip of the iceberg," says Kitts.

Bug Nerds Tell You How to Fight

4 National Bed Bug Summit Held Today

Several members of the Entomological Society of America (ESA) gave presentations today at the Second Annual National Bed Bug Summit, presented by the EPA. Held in Washington, DC, the meeting had an important focus: "Advancing Towards Solutions to the Bed Bug Problem." Dr. Dini Miller of Virginia Tech University said, "The clothes dryer is the number-one line of defense. Clutter removal also helps by removing bed bug hiding places." She discussed integrated pest management (IPM) methods, such as the use of mattress encasements, heat, dessicant dust, the vacuum cleaner, plus appropriately used chemical treatments. Dr. Coby Schal of North Carolina State University talked about the need for additional bed bug research, noting that we have 50 times more research on mosquitoes than bed bugs.

A Jab Against Childhood Cancer

5 Some Vaccines May Lower Leukemia Risk in Kids

Researchers have shown that countries in which high numbers of kids are vaccinated against polio are 20 less likely to develop any childhood cancer and those who have a polio and Hepatitis B vaccine are 30 to 40 percent less likely to develop acute lymphoblastic leukemia, respectively. Previous studies have shown that common infections in childhood might increase the likelihood of developing leukemia, so the idea that vaccines would reduce that risk is reasonable. Over 10,000 kids are diagnosed with cancer annually, and the most common are brain cancers, spinal cord cancers and leukemia. This study by no means suggest that vaccines are guaranteed to protect a child from getting cancer, but does support previous research looking at vaccination and childhood cancer.
