Gives More Accurate "After” Pic

1 Imaging Software Aids Plastic Surgery Patients

New three-dimensional imaging software, developed by Dr. Alex Bronstein, Tel Aviv U, gives cosmetic surgery patients an accurate picture of what they can expect their surgery to achieve - before the scalpel is inserted. Prior to this development, cosmetic surgeons showed patients before and after photos of other patients or relied on two-dimensional image-prediction software to give patients an idea of how their cosmetic surgery would look. But these had their limitations and sometimes patients were surprised or disappointed by the results. "Our program is more like a virtual mirror. It gives surgeons and their patients a way to see a 3D before-and-after image as though the patient has really undergone the operation," says Dr. Bronstein.

CBS has ordered extra episodes of "Mike & Molly" and "Rules of Engagement" to fill the void left by Charlie Sheen’s decision to seek treatment for his addiction, unnamed sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Sheen’s popular sitcom, "Two and a Half Men" is on hiatus while he undergoes a rehabilitation program in his home with an expert trained in addiction. "In compliance with the national health privacy laws (HIPPA), no further information relating to Charlie Sheen's health or his rehab experience will be released without his written permission. I can say that all of us who know Charlie care about him very much. We will support him in any we can in this journey, beginning by respecting his privacy,” Sheen’s spokesperson Stan Rosenfeld tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Plus Women under 60 Are Too Busy

3 Obese Report More Pain with Mammograms

Obese women might avoid mammograms because they feel pain during the procedure, while women under 60 may avoid mammograms because they're too busy, find researchers from Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research. Funded by the National Cancer Institute, the study is one of the largest to analyze why women with insurance don't get mammograms. Findings, reported in the Journal of Women's Health, reveal that obese women, those who've had health insurance less than five years, women under 60 and those with a household income under $40,000 were more likely to avoid mammograms. Researchers studied the records of 4,708 women ages 50 to 69 who didn't get a mammogram despite having received reminders. They followed up with surveys to determine why some of the women didn't get mammograms.

Former First Daughter Speaks Up

4 Barbara Bush Supports Same Sex Marriage

Barbara Bush, daughter of former President George W. Bush, has made a video for "New Yorkers for Marriage Equality," sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign. Her stance is somewhat surprising given that her father had wanted a constitutional amendment that would ban same sex marriage. In the video, Barbara says "I'm Barbara Bush, and I'm a New Yorker for marriage equality. New York is about fairness and equality. And everyone should have the right to marry the person that they love. Join us." CBS News reports that other prominent Republicans like Laura Bush, Ted Olson and Dick Cheney also support marriage equality.

Awareness of Man Boobs Increases

6 Male Breast Reduction Surgeries on Rise

The number of male breast reduction surgeries performed in Britain increased by 28 percent last year, reports BBC. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) says that the operation represents one third of the cosmetic surgery industry in the UK. Last year, BAAPS members performed 741 male breast reduction surgeries, compared to 581 the previous year. According to Rajiv Grover, president elect of BAAPS, the surgeries are increasing due to mounting awareness of man boobs. Grover told BBC that about 30 percent of men asking about the surgery are told to focus on losing weight instead.

One-Third Also Have High BP

7 A Third of Americans Have Cholesterol Problem

A third of American adults have unhealthy cholesterol levels, and half of them aren't treated for their elevated cholesterol levels, says the CDC in their recent report. Two-thirds of American adults don't have their cholesterol fully controlled. The CDC also found that people without health insurance are the least likely to have their cholesterol or blood pressure under control. MSNBC reports that CDC also found that a third of American adults have high blood pressure, and a third of them don't get it treated. Half of those with high blood pressure don't have it fully under control, says the CDC. According to MSNBC, federal health officials believe that the "fragmented U.S. healthcare system" should take some of the blame for the uncontrolled risks for heart disease in America.

Moms Should Be Reassured

8 Sex During Pregnancy Is Safe for Most

For most women, with only a few exceptions, sex during pregnancy is safe, finds a research study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. Potential, yet uncommon, risks include premature labor, pelvic inflammatory disease, hemorrhage in placenta previa, and blood clots. Restriction of intercourse is recommended for women at risk for premature labor, such as those with cervical incompetence or a history of early labor, even though the evidence to this point is limited. “Sex in pregnancy is normal,” write the authors. “There are very few proven contradictions and risks to intercourse in low-risk pregnancies, and therefore these patients should be reassured.” Comfort level and readiness should be used as a guide for sexual activity during pregnancy and postpartum.

Affects Brain Development

9 Low Omega 3 in Pregnancy May Lead to Depression

Because omega-3 fatty acids play a crucial role in brain function, a deficiency of this nutrient has been implicated in such conditions as poor memory and depression. New research finds that pregnant women who have a dietary insufficiency of omega-3’s increase the risk of the unborn child to later develop depression in adulthood. Scientists from Spain fed mice a life-long diet imbalanced in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and found that a lack of the former disturbed neuronal communication. This dysfunction was accompanied by depressive behaviors in the malnourished animals. Although fish is the best source of omega-3’s, pregnant women are discouraged from eating more than a single 6-ounce meal per week due to the potential for mercury toxicity.

Reinforces Good Habits

10 Phone Counseling Can Help People Stick to Diet

For people at high risk for heart disease, making lifestyle changes, such as a healthy diet and regular physical exercise, are recommended. However, it is clear that not everyone is making those changes, as heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the US. A study published in the American Journal of Cardiology finds that group counseling sessions via telephone can help more patients stick to it and eat more fruits and vegetables, lower sodium intake, exercise more, and quit smoking. During the study, all participants received a risk assessment and discussion about healthy changes, but the half that received additional phone counseling six times over the course of two months had made more significant changes in their health, including lowered blood pressure.
