1 New Hypersonic Weight Loss Diet a Scam

"Update: Further investigation seems to absolve QualityHealth of being behind this. Lab Notes will publish a new item naming the affiliate company that seems to have orchestrated this spam campaign when we get a little more information."
- Diet Choices Editor in the comments

The spam comments on diet-related blog posts and newspaper sites began about two months ago, the commenters testifying to an amazing new diet program that helped them lose up to 100 pounds in 31 weeks. What kind of diet is this Hypersonic Weight Loss? It turns out that there is no diet at all. The comments are part of an elaborate scheme to lure internet users with health problems to a website called QualityHealth, where they are presented with a lengthy questionnaire about their health conditions and then asked to agree to receive e-mails, postal mails and even telephone calls from marketers for pharmaceutical and medical products companies. A representative of QualityHealth blames the promotion on a rogue outside marketing promotion company.

Buckle Up for Safety

2 85 Percent of Adults Use Seat Belts Regularly

Auto crashes are the leading cause of death in the US for people ages 5 to 34, says a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and eighty-five percent of adult Americans use seat belts regularly. While that’s a huge jump from the 11% who reported regular use in 1982, not everyone buckles up for safety. Regular seat belt use has become the social norm, but 1 in 7 adults doesn’t use a belt for every car trip. The report doesn’t indicate when adults choose to wear a belt but emphasizes the need to do so for every car trip. Seat belt use is higher in states with “primary enforcement seat belt laws” on their books. The CDC report indicates that 12000 injuries and 450 deaths could have been prevented in the 19 states where seat belt use is not mandatory.

3 Ticket After Police Escort for Pregnant Woman

"How about pulling over and delivering the baby on the side of the road?"
- Reggie in the comments

A New Hampshire state police officer provided an escort for a couple trying to reach a Manchester hospital in time for the birth of their child in September, but after the baby was born the officer offered congratulations and a ticket! Baby Kyle was delivered just six minutes after the couple reached the hospital. While new dad John Coughlin says he'll fight the speeding ticket, MSNBC reports that state police say it was deserved since he put lives at risk. Coughlin hit 102 mph during the drive to the hospital. After a trooper started following Coughlin during his speedy drive, he dialed 911 to explain his speeding and received a police escort.

The Leaky B@@B Fate Uncertain

4 Facebook Deletes Breastfeeding Group

The Leaky B@@b, a breastfeeding support group on Facebook, has been under attack, a victim of Facebook's indecision over whether to delete the support page over breastfeeding images. The page for The Leaky B@@b, founded and edited by mother-of-five Jessica Martin-Weber, has been taken down twice by Facebook, says Parenting.com. Facebook said that images featured on the page are a violation of their Terms of Service. Facebook originally took the support page down on Sunday, then reinstated it on Tuesday, saying the deletion was a mistake. However, Facebook deleted The Leaky B@@b once again on Tuesday night! The page was back again on Wednesday though. The Leaky B@@B is now a support group with its own support groups, Bring Back the Leaky Boob - again, and TLB Support!

Benefits Outweigh Costs However

5 Food Safety Bill Signed but Without Funding

On Tuesday, President Obama signed into law the Food Safety Modernization Act to “improve the security and safety of our nation’s food supply.” The main purpose of the law is to create a shift from the current process of the FDA reacting to food borne illness outbreaks to taking steps to prevent them from occurring in the first place. The problem, however, is that there doesn’t seem to be enough in the budget to cover the estimated $1.4 billion price tag. Erik Olson, director of food and consumer safety at the Pew Health Group, says that the cost of protecting Americans is worth the benefit. He points to a Georgetown University study that finds that food borne illnesses cost the country $152 billion a year in medical costs, lost productivity and other expenses.

Same As Our Kids Do

6 What Do Chefs’ Kids Eat for Lunch?

The Baltimore Sun offers a peak into the lunch habits of the children of some famous local chefs and the news is good for parents who send their kids off to school with “Lunchables” - their kids are just like ours. Scott Smith, chef and owner of a favorite Baltimore barbeque restaurant, and his wife Irene often send their daughters to school with very elaborate, homemade lunches. But they come home and ask for the packaged Oscar Mayer meals so they can eat like the other kids. Celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio’s 3-year-old son Thatcher is a picky eater who will only eat his cheese sandwich a certain way. And while chef Brendan Keegan likes to make homemade natural granola bars for a class snack, his son Wylie likes to down the refined flour and sugar mini-cupcakes from other parents.

Keep the Doctor Away

7 The Secret to a Long Life? Eating Apples

You likely have never heard of her, but Willie Stikeleather of Stoney Point, North Carolina will be turning 100 this month. To what does she credit her long life? Eating apples, especially the ones her family grew in her early life. As you know, eating “an apple a day will keep the doctor away” because the healthful fruit is a source of both soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber can help prevent cholesterol buildup in the blood vessel walls, thus reducing the risk of heart disease. Insoluble fiber provides digestive bulk which helps food move through more easily. Apples are also a good source of vitamin C, which can help promote health in the immune system. Other apple benefits – they are low calorie (81 per medium apple) and a natural mouth freshener.
