ConsIstency Is Key

1 Exercise Lowers Mortality from Colon Cancer

Consistent physical activity lowers the risk of dying from colon cancer finds a study from Washington U School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Working with colleagues from the American Cancer Society, researchers examined years of data from 150,000 people to determine whether changes in activity levels affected either the incidence of colon cancer or the risk of death from the disease. They found that those who participated in a program of regular exercise for at least 10 years had the lowest mortality risk from the disease. Researchers say that the benefits of regular exercise accrue over time, but it’s never too late to start exercising. "You go for a 30-minute walk every day, and you're going to reduce your risk of a number of diseases,” says author Kathleen Y. Wolin.

Lying Detected with Blood Tests

2 Pregnant Women Denying Smoking

Around one in four women who smoke while pregnant deny it, suggests a new study involving more than 4,000 women. The number of pregnant smokers who deny their habit could be even higher among women in their 20s. Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta and colleagues note in their study report that smoking by pregnant women is one of the most preventable causes of death and illness in babies. According to MSNBC, the researchers estimated the number of pregnant and nonpregnant smokers ages 20 to 44 years who didn't disclose their smoking habit on a questionnaire. Researchers were able to uncover the deception by measuring cotinine levels in the blood of women in the study. Cotinine is a byproduct of nicotine used to detect exposure to tobacco smoke.

Cervical Cancer Vaccine Expanded

3 Gardasil Approved for Preventing Anal Cancer

Gardasil, a vaccine already approved for preventing cervical cancer, has gained approval from the FDA for prevention of anal cancer in people ages 9 through 26 years. “Treatment for anal cancer is challenging; the use of Gardasil as a method of prevention is important as it may result in fewer diagnoses and the subsequent surgery, radiation or chemotherapy that individuals need to endure,” says Karen Midthun, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. Gardasil is also approved for precancerous lesions associated with anal cancer involving human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6, 11, 16 and 18. Gardasil may also be used to prevent vaginal and vulvar cancer, as well as genital warts caused by HPV types 6 and 11 in males and females.

Expect More Imports

4 Corn, Green Bean Prices Rise After Florida Freezes

Shoppers can expect higher food prices after unusually cold weather has killed most of Florida's green bean and sweet corn crops, says CBS News. Florida lost at least $273 million in the December freezes, including damage to nearly 9,000 acres of crops. Some vegetable farmers in Florida have even used the expensive method of flying helicopters over crops to warm them. The state is the largest producer of sweet corn and green beans for the U.S., but consumers should expect to see more imports on shelves while crops recover. Eggplant, lettuce and bell pepper crops have also suffered. Florida farmer Sam Accursio told CBS News that he's never experienced a growing season with four frosts in a single year. Gov. Charlie Crist has extended Florida's state of emergency for agriculture.

Processed Meat Too

5 Eating Red Meat Increases Woman’s Risk of Stroke

In a new study of more than 30,000 Swedish women, a team of researchers from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm finds that women who eat a lot of red meat may be putting themselves at increased risk of stroke. Women who ate at least 102 grams daily – or about 3.6 ounces – were 42 percent more likely to suffer a cerebral infarction (where blood flow to the brain is blocked) compared to women who ate less than 25 grams or just under one ounce. Women who ate more processed meat were also at increased risk. Several mechanisms could explain the association, per lead author Dr. Susanna Larsson. Both types of meat are linked to high blood pressure, the main cause of stroke. Also, the iron contained in red meat may also accelerate production of tissue-damaging free radicals.

Higher Co-Pays

6 Weight Loss Surgery Carries Unexpected Costs

According to the latest statistics, the number of people having bariatric surgery (gastric bypass or gastric band) has increased in the US over 800 percent between 1998 and 2004. What many do not realize when pursuing the life-saving weight loss option is that there are many unexpected costs to consider. First, verify that your insurance actually pays for the surgery as only about half of large employer health plans do. Second, ensure you have a good understanding of what insurance will not pay for. Bariatric surgery often has a higher co-payment and some costs, such preoperative programs and specialist consults, may not be covered at all. There is also the consideration of cosmetic surgery afterward as extreme weight loss can lead to excess skin. This is rarely covered by insurance.

Clots Harder to Breakdown

7 Alzheimer's Protein Worsens Blood Clots

Researchers at the Rockefeller University found that a form of amyloid-β called Aβ42, the main type found in plaques that are a hallmark of Alzheimer’s, interacts with the clotting agent fibrinogen and creates clots that are more difficult to breakdown. They produce oligomeric fibrinogen, an abnormally structured blood clot. It is hypothesized that inflammation of neurons, reduced blood flow and cognitive impairment likely are effects of these clots in the brain's blood vessels. This study demonstrates the mechanism of this interaction and grew out of a study showing that amyloid-β forms these abnormal blood clots and lowering fibrinogen levels might decrease symptoms. Future studies will investigate compounds that will prevent Aβ42 and fibrinogen from interacting with each other.
