Ban Silver Fillings?

1 FDA Reexamines Amalgam Dental Fillings

The FDA has decided to revisit whether mercury-containing, silver-colored amalgam fillings are safe for dental patients, reports MSNBC. Amalgam fillings are a cheap alternative to tooth-colored resin composites. In 2009, the FDA decided that amalgam fillings are safe, but later added that pregnant women and children should avoid them. Four groups have petitioned the FDA to think again on whether the fillings are really safe for anyone. The FDA asked an outside panel to study mercury exposure in patients with amalgam fillings. Since the data hasn't changed after the FDA's 2009 ruling, the American Dental Association has said that there's no scientific reason to revisit whether amalgam fillings are safe. Yet, some groups are planning to hold protests asking for the fillings to be banned.

Peripartum Cardiomyopathy

2 Washington Post Highlights Rare Pregnancy Disorder

Ian Shapira of the Washington Post tells the story of Shana Greatman Swears through a series of her Facebook page postings. In March, Shana and her husband were thrilled to learn that they were pregnant with their first child, who was born September 22 without any complications. But Shana went on to develop a rare condition called peripartum cardiomyopathy which weakens the heart, and she ultimately died on October 31. In the United States, peripartum cardiomyopathy complicates one in every 1,300 to 4,000 deliveries. It may occur in a woman of any age, but is most common in after age 30. Risk factors include obesity, having a personal cardiac disorder history, the use of certain medications, smoking, alcoholism, multiple pregnancies, being African American and being malnourished.

3 Michael Moore Checks into Weight Loss Camp

"How nice to be in Florida now rather than freezing, cold, snowy Michigan. I hope it works. Best of luck to him!"
- Cara in the comments

Filmmaker Michael Moore, best known for documentaries Fahrenheit 9/11 and Sicko, has checked into a $4,500-a-week weight loss camp in Miami, Florida. An unnamed source states that Mr. Moore seems to have gained considerable weight recently. The Pritikin Longevity Center and Spa, also patronized by Moore in 2005, is a health resort that primarily promotes weight loss through the Pritikin Diet, studied also for its positive effects on heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension. Each day, participants receive nutrition education classes, fitness training, stress management workshops and one-on-one counseling with a physician. The diet itself is based on natural whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and seafood. Red meat and poultry are limited.

Step Down Approach

4 General Mills Lowers Sugar in Cereal for Kids

General Mills has announced that by December 31, eleven of its cereals that are geared toward children, such as Lucky Charms and Trix, will have its sugar content reduced from 11 grams to no more than 10 grams. The company is reducing the sugar in the cereal in small, incremental steps so that consumers are not as likely to notice the difference and stop buying the product. “We will not make changes if it reduces the taste of the food,” said company president Jeff Harmening. He states that the ultimate goal is to have all kids’ cereals reduced to no more than 9 grams of sugar. Ready-to-eat cereals account for about 5 percent of a child’s sugar intake on average. In addition to reducing sugar, General Mills is also increasing key nutrients, including calcium and vitamin D.

Men Are from Mars...

5 Sexes Attack Diet and Exercise Differently

Men are often more successful when they put their mind to changing their healthy habits, such as diet and exercise. This is because the two genders approach their health goals differently, says a professor of health and human performance at Middle Tennessee State University. Although men do care about what they weigh, says Dr. Mark Anshel, they are more likely to create a challenging goal in order to get there, such as doing extra weight sets or adding an extra serving of vegetables. Women, on the other hand, tend to focus only on getting to a certain weight. Naming a specific performance goal, rather than a result, increases motivation and keeps workouts more interesting, ultimately leading to successful weight loss.

Disease and Treatment in Threes

6 Triple Combination Effective against Cancer

Three drugs may help fight “triple negative breast cancer,” cancers that do not have receptors for estrogen, progesterone or HER2, making targeted treatment nearly impossible. The three drugs, Entinostat, All Trans Retinoic Acid and low doses of either doxorubicin or paclitaxel kill tumor cells more in cell cultures and mice. Multiple triple negative breast cancer cell lines that were treated with the triple combo stopped growing. Inhibition of tumor growth was seen in seventy-five percent of mice who had cancer cells engrafted and were treated. The first two interact with the retinoic acid receptor-beta (RARβ) gene which halts the growth of the cancer and the other two are conventional chemotherapeutic agents. Researchers are hoping that clinical trials will begin next year.

Look Left. . .or Right?

7 The Biology of Political Ideology Seen in the Eyes

One’s political ideology may be identified based on how they shift their attention in relation to another person’s eye movements. Seventy two people sat in front of computer screen and were instructed to focus on a small black cross that disappeared as a person’s face appeared without pupils in the eyes. They appeared looking left or right followed by a round target on the left or right side of the face. The person would tap on the space bar upon seeing the target. Then the volunteers’ political ideology was disclosed to researchers and it was found that liberals responded more strongly to the prompts compared to conservatives. Based on these results, researchers hypothesize that conservatives place a higher value on personal autonomy and therefore are less influenced by others.
