Fed Officials Are Investigating

1 Results from Quick Diabetes Tests May be Dubious

Results from OTC tests for diabetes may return false results, say federal health officials. Doctors use a version of the test, known as the A l c test, that was endorsed by the Am. Diabetes Assn. which specified that only A l c tests performed by closely regulated labs should be used for diagnosis. The concern is over the use of quick, over-the-counter tests. "We have no way to know how accurate or inaccurate these tests are ... and whether they're being performed correctly,” says David B. Sacks, Nat’l Glycohemoglobin Standardization Program. Says Walgreens spokesman Jim Cohn, "These tests are not used to provide a clinical diagnosis or recommend any treatment. What we do is provide patients test results and encourage them to report the results to their primary care provider.”

Marriage Makes Men Nicer

2 Married Men Behave More Nicely

Nice men are more likely to get married, and marriage also improves the behavior of men! Michigan State University researchers found that not only are nicer men more likely to tie the knot, but bad behavior in men decreases after marriage. For 12 years, researchers followed 289 pairs of male twins between the ages of 17 and 29. More than half of the participants were identical twins raised in the same household. The sixty percent who got married showed less antisocial behavior at ages 17 to 20. By 29, married men had an average of 0.8 antisocial behaviors, compared with 1.3 antisocial behaviors among unmarried men. Among the identical twins with one unmarried, the married twin had fewer bad behaviors after marriage, suggesting that marriage (not genes or environment) affected behavior.

New Mercury Concerns

3 Pregnant Women Should Avoid Tuna

"Harvard says, 'The health benefits to adults and unborn babies from eating fish are greater than the harm caused by its mercury content'"
- Mark in the comments

Pregnant women should avoid tuna, and young women and children should limit their intake due to mercury levels in packaged and canned fish, says Consumer Reports in its January 2011 issue. The report indicates that albacore or white tuna often contains much more mercury than light tuna. Investigators tested 42 pouches or cans of tuna purchased mostly from the New York City area. According to CNN, the investigators found that all the samples contained measurable levels of mercury, up to 0.774 parts per million, with samples of white tuna averaging 0.427 ppm. Consumer Reports believes that current FDA and EPA guidelines on acceptable amounts of tuna for women of childbearing age and young children are too generous at up to 6 ounces of white tuna or up to 12 ounces of light tuna weekly.

4 Good Grades in High School Mean Better Health

Better academic performance during high school leads to better health throughout life, say researchers from University of Wisconsin-Madison. For the last 53 years, researchers followed 10,000 graduates of a high school class of 1957. Findings, published in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, reveal that the higher the research participant's high school rank, the lower the probability that person had worsening health near retirement age. Researchers thought that the link could be explained by more conscientious people doing better in school and taking better care of themselves, but the data didn't support that. Pamela Herd, associate professor of public affairs and sociology at UW-Madison, says that "what we're seeing is what you learn in school may actually matter for your health."

Calming Effect on Ill Patients

5 Music May Relieve Stress of Assisted Breathing

Patients who must use mechanical ventilation to breathe may find some stress relief in music, suggest researchers. Assisted breathing is often very stressful due to the sensation of breathlessness, the inability to talk, frequent suctioning and discomfort. Music may help relieve some of that stress and help with feelings of isolation. According to a new review published in The Cochrane Library, listening to music reduced anxiety compared to standard care. While listening to music didn't lower blood pressure, it did reduce heart and breathing rates. Researchers suggest that more studies are needed, but since music is an easy treatment to implement, it should be offered to critically ill patients.

Wake Up to Better Memory

6 Coffee and Doughnuts Make You Smarter

"You could also interpret this to mean that people who have caffeine withdrawal and are so hungry that all they can think about is breakfast don't perform well on tests"
- Cleo in the comments

A caffeine-glucose combo may give your brain a boost by aiding in attention and memory, claim Spanish researchers. Yet, study participants didn't get to enjoy doughnuts or coffee! After fasting overnight, study subjects were given water, water plus caffeine, water plus glucose, or water plus caffeine and glucose, reports MSNBC. Subjects were tested on memory, manual dexterity, visuo-spatial and frontal functions, and attention. While reaction time improved in those given glucose or caffeine, subjects given both caffeine and glucose showed improvements in attention and verbal memory. Researchers concluded that the coffee-sugar combo can make brains more efficient. Yet, they do say further studies are needed.

Works with Risks

7 New Diet Pill Contrave Closer to Approval

Contrave by Orexigen Therapeutics Inc. may soon be the first new diet pill to go on the market in a decade. The pill was recommended by an FDA panel, reports Yahoo News. Despite concerns over heart risks and only moderate gains in weight loss, the panel still recommended Contrave 13 to 7. Experts complained that the drug company failed to include elderly patients with a history of heart disease in their clinical trials. While the FDA isn't required to follow the recommendations of their expert panels, drugs that are recommended often gain FDA approval. The FDA is expected to make a decision on Contrave by January 31. Contrave, a combination pill that mixes an antidepressant with an anti-addiction drug, may raise blood pressure.
