Survival of the Most Beautiful

1 Attractive Couples Have More Daughters

Good-looking couples are more likely to have daughters, says evolutionary psychologist Dr. Satoshi Kanazawa in a study that tracked 17,000 British babies from birth. A followup interview at age 45 found that those who were rated as most attractive by their childhood teachers, had more daughters. Kanazawa, who co-authored a book on this subject, wrote that attractiveness benefits women more than men in regard to mating. Men seek beautiful women but women look for qualities like status. Dr. Hugh Taylor, editor of Reproductive Science in which the study is published said, “It is a controversial area and not the type of paper that our journal typically publishes.” [The editors] “do not endorse the finding of any paper we publish as true, but do want to encourage debate.” Comments?

Positive Side of Dying

2 Exposure to Death Not Negative for Hospice Workers

While you might think that always working around dying people could be saddening, a new study reveals that death and dying doesn't negatively affect hospice and palliative care workers. The article, appearing in CMAJ (the Canadian Medical Association Journal), included hospice and palliative care professionals in five centers in Canada. Shane Sinclair, who works in Spiritual Care Services at Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Canada, writes that study participants reported their work provides them with an opportunity to "discover meaning in life through the lessons of their patients, and an opportunity to incorporate these teachings in their own lives." While the participants did attest to the weighty nature of their work, they believed that was "outweighed by the many affirming life lessons."

Calm Legs Without Euphoria

3 Parkinson Drug for Restless Leg Syndrome

Rasagaline, a drug for Parkinson's disease, may be useful for treating restless leg syndrome (RLS) with fewer side effects than current drugs for RLS. Since Rasagaline prolongs the effect of the body's existing dopamine, Medical College of Georgia (MCG) researchers think the drug may not have adverse effects like current therapies for RLS, which prompt the brain to make more dopamine. They're evaluating Rasagaline's safety and efficacy in treating RLS. The drug could spare RLS patients the feelings of euphoria sometimes increased when the brain produces more dopamine. Dr. Shyamal Mehta, neurologist and neuroscientist at MCG, says that some people taking current RLS therapy "report behavioral problems like addiction, because the pleasure they get from things like shopping is multiplied."

A Very Deep Massage

4 Rolfing Popular Again

Rolfing, a type of very deep massage, is popular again. The massage, a favorite back when Nixon was in office, is now popular among the the "yoga-Pilates-acupuncture crowd," reports NPR. Rolfing, named after American biochemist Ida Rolf, involves stretching out fascia tissue, which fuses skin to muscle and muscle to bone. Rolfers believe that working with fascia to make it more pliable can improve strength and posture, and hopefully reduce aches and pain. However, there's no firm research supporting the effectiveness of rolfing in reducing pain or improving posture and strength. NPR reports that the few studies that have been completed are "too limited or flawed to draw any conclusions."

Beating Common Cancers

5 Low-Dose Aspirin Prevents Cancer Deaths

Taking low-dose aspirin for at least five years can help prevent death from some forms of cancer, say researchers. Low-dose aspirin has been found to reduce large bowel cancer, as well other common individual cancers (esophagus, lung, stomach, pancreas, brain) by around 20 to 30 percent. Despite this reduction in cancer deaths, researchers caution that unless the risk of cancer is very high, the benefits of low-dose aspirin therapy don't outweigh the risk of serious bleeding problems. Individuals should speak with their doctors before beginning any kind of aspirin regimen. Findings are published in Lancet.

Still Got It

6 Men Ages 75 to 90 Still Want Sex

Almost a third of men ages 75 to 90 have had sex in the last year, and many of them want to have more sex than they currently have, say researchers who studied nearly 2,800 men. According to a new survey by the University of Western Australia, very old men are still interested in sex, but their enthusiasm is often curbed by their physical limitations or those of their partners. Common problems that can interfere with sexual activity in old age include diabetes, osteoporosis or prostate cancer, reports MSNBC. Study researcher Zoe Hyde suggests that men who want to remain sexually active into their golden years take steps now to prevent chronic diseases like diabetes.

In Good Spirits

7 Elizabeth Edwards Stops Cancer Treatment

Doctors for Elizabeth Edwards, who suffers from metastatic breast cancer, have said that future cancer treatments would be futile. The wife of two-time presidential candidate John Edwards released a statement. She said that in "... the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious." According to CNN, Edwards, who has a prognosis of weeks, is not in pain, but is receiving treatment for symptoms. She's said to be in good spirits, surrounded by family and friends, including John Edwards.
