Lowers Maternal Smoking

1 Citywide Smoking Ban Decreases Pre-Term Births

A smoking ban in Pueblo, CO, resulted in a 23 percent decrease in the odds of preterm births and a 37 percent decrease in the odds of maternal smoking, finds a U of Colorado study that studied data collected before and after the ban took effect. The study indicates that banning smoking has a significant and immediate benefit for pregnant women and their unborn babies. Studies show that preemies have a greater tendency towards heart disease later in life. "This research proves that smoking is an irrefutable risk factor for expectant mothers who are acutely more affected," said lead researcher Associate Professor Dr. Robert Page. "The good news is that implementing strong tobacco control policy can protect even the most vulnerable from the deadly consequences of smoking."

Egrifta Kills Fat

2 First Drug for HIV Treatment Side Effects

Egrifta, a drug to counter excess fat caused by some HIV treatments, was approved this week by the FDA. MSNBC reports that the drug treats lipodystrophy, a condition that causes excess fat in the stomach and liver, as well as other abdominal organs. Lipodystrophy is common in HIV patients on anti-viral drugs. Egrifta, developed by Theratechnologies Inc., is given once daily via injection. Before gaining approval, the new drug was used for six months on more than 800 HIV patients with abdominal fat. While Egrifta has some common side effects (joint pain, skin redness and rash), patients taking the drug had significantly less fat than those who were given a placebo injection.

Better Than Walking

3 Yoga Enhances Brain Chemical for Better Mood

Yoga has been shown to be better than walking or other forms of exercise for having a positive effect on mood and anxiety levels. Researchers say that yoga increases the brain chemical gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is reduced in people suffering from mood and anxiety disorders. Findings, published in Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, reveal that increased GABA levels, which were measured following a session of yoga postures, are associated with improved mood and decreased anxiety. Study authors think that yoga may stimulate specific areas of the brain, resulting in positive changes to endogenous antidepressant neurotransmitters like GABA.

Acne May Be a Killer

4 Severe Acne Increases Suicide Risk

People who have severe acne also have an increased risk of attempting suicide, say researchers. Study findings, presented in British Medical Journal, show that additional suicide risk is also present up to one year after being treated with the drug isotretinoin, marketed as Roaccutane, Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis, Clarus or Decutan. Researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden analyzed suicide attempts before, during and after treatment with isotretinoin for severe acne. They found that suicide risk was greatest within six months after isotretinoin treatment stopped. Researchers speculate that the suicide risk may be highest after treatment because patients whose acne improved were upset if their social lives didn't improve as well.

People Focus During Sex

5 Wandering Mind Makes People Unhappy

People spend nearly 50 percent of their time thinking about something other than what they're doing, and it's causing unhappiness, say researchers. Harvard University researchers used iPhones to collect 250,000 data points about participants' daily thoughts, feelings and actions, says Science Daily. The iPhone web app contacted more than 2,000 volunteers at random intervals to ask what they were currently doing (shopping, eating, etc.), whether they were thinking about their current activity, and if they felt happy. Researchers report that volunteers said their minds were wandering 46.9 percent of the time, during nearly all activities except making love! Currently, more than 5,000 individual are utilizing the iPhone web app, located at www.trackyourhappiness.org.

Chemical Linked to Health Issues

6 Food Is Main Source of BPA Exposure

According to an international panel of experts, food is by far the main source of human exposure to bisphenol A. BPA migrates from food packaging, such as that in plastic containers and the linings of cans, into the food itself, said scientists with the World Health Organization and the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization. Studies have linked BPA to breast cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and reproduction problems. Many states are moving to ban the chemical from food and drink containers, especially those meant for children. The FDA, however, though calling the chemical “concerning” in January, has yet to make such a ruling. They are conducting an ongoing investigation into health risks associated with BPA.

Four Loko Blackout in a Can

7 Washington and Michigan Ban Alcohol Energy Drinks

Both Washington and Michigan have banned the sale of highly caffeinated, heavy-alcohol beverages popularly known as “blackout in a can” following the hospitalization of nine students from Central Washington University last month. Concerns raised in 2008 have caused major brewers such as Anheuser Busch inBev and SABMiller to stop making high-alcohol energy drinks, but smaller companies continue to produce them, such as Phusion Projects who makes Four Loko, the beverage that caused the hospitalization. According to CWU officials, the blood-alcohol level of the students ranged from .123 to .35 (.30 is considered lethal). Caffeine suspends the effects of alcohol, allowing a person to continue to drink long after they normally would have stopped.
