Stiff Blood Vessels

1 Obese Kids Have Same Signs of CV Disease As Adults

Obese children have similar signs of CV disease as older adults, says Dr. Kevin Harris, who evaluated 63 obese children and found that they had aortic stiffness, an early indicator of heart disease and early death. For the study, Harris evaluated the children’s blood pressure, BMIs and lipid panels. The children also had ultrasounds of the heart and blood vessels to determine how quickly blood flows. Test results, for all but the kids’ blood vessels, were normal. Harris says this is significant because the elastic quality of the children’s blood vessels was impaired even though other measures of heart disease were normal. The next step, says Harris, is to determine whether the damage is reversible with lifestyle changes. The mean age of the children in Harris’s study was 13.

Cited As Ineffective

2 Weight Loss Drug Denied FDA Approval

Lorcaserin, a prescription weight loss drug, was denied FDA approval when the organization cited any weight loss it produced as “marginal.” The FDA also cited concerns when laboratory animals developed tumors during early stage testing of the drug. This past summer, Qnexa, another weight loss drug, was rejected by the FDA after studies showed signs of heart palpitations. Had Lorcaserin been approved, it would have been the first prescription weight loss drug in more than ten years. Lorcaserin’s backers contend that the drug offers a safer way to lose weight than older medications and has fewer side effects and plan to pursue discussions with the FDA. Readers may remember that in 1997, fen-phen was pulled from the market when it became evident that it caused heart valve problems.

Sickens Thousands

3 Cholera Outbreak After Haiti Earthquake

An outbreak of cholera in Haiti has sickened 3,000 people and claimed 250 lives, say authorities who worry that the disease might strike the capital city of Port-au-Prince, home of 1.3 million earthquake survivors. Cholera, a deadly disease that causes severe diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration, is spread when people eat or drink contaminated food or water. Many Haitians are living in squalid refugee camps in the aftermath of an earthquake that devastated the country last January. Cholera is also rampant in Nigeria where more than 1,500 people have died. The disease can be managed but patients need to replace lost fluids rapidly, either by drinking special water solutions or intravenously. Visitors to cholera-stricken locations are warned to drink only bottled or canned beverages.

Want a Burger with That?

4 McDonald's Offering Fast Food Weddings

McDonald's will offer fast-food weddings in Hong Kong. McWeddings cost much less than traditional weddings in Hong Kong, and up to 100 guests can attend. McDonald's has said that the weddings make sense. Some people met at McDonald's or they just really want to get married there. According to Treehugger, the restaurant is also offering anniversary and engagement parties with McDonald's providing decorations, gifts and audio. Treehugger writes of the fast-food wedding idea: "Overall, it all sounds a little overfried, and we sincerely hope that this will be a passing fad."

Checking During Cut

5 Blood Pressure Checks at the Barbershop

Offering blood pressure monitoring at the barbershop may help black men improve control over their high blood pressure, researchers suggest. Study findings, to be reported in Archives of Internal Medicine, reveal that barber-based intervention resulted in greater improvement in control of high blood pressure. Barbers in the intervention group, but not the control group, offered patrons blood pressure checks during haircuts, and study participants were followed up on for 10 months. Providing community-based help with health care may be important for black men since study authors note that "compared with black women, men have less frequent physician contact for preventive care and thus substantially lower rates of hypertension detection, medical treatment and control."

Which Doctor Makes $92 an Hour?

6 Specialists Make Much More Than GPs

Specialists earn much more than doctors in general practice, finds a new study on doctor salaries. The wage gap could be contributing to the high cost of health care and the shortage of primary care physicians, say study authors. MSNBC reports that the study involved more than 6,000 practicing doctors. Researchers found that doctors earn an average of $187,857 while working 53 hours per week. The lowest wages, around $60.48 per hour, were earned by primary care physicians. Yet, surgeons earned around $92 an hour, while pediatric and internal doctors made about $85 an hour. Study findings are reported in Archives of Internal Medicine.

7 Dentists Buying Halloween Candy

If you end up with a pile of candy the kids just don't like from Halloween, or if they simply collect too much, you may want to find an eager dentist waiting to buy the candy. MNN (Mother Nature Network) reports on the leftover candy collection called Halloween Candy Buy Back. Interested candy holders may type in their ZIP to see if a dentist is participating close by. Dentists will pay $1 a pound for the candy, which will be put into care packages for the U.S. military. The candy collection is part of Operation Gratitude, which will make possible the distribution of 60,000 care packages this holiday season.

With Proper Safety Precautions

8 Strength Training Can Be Beneficial for Children

With a properly designed and supervised program, resistance training can be beneficial for children; leading to significantly increased muscular strength found a new study conducted at the German Sport University Cologne. Researchers found that strength or resistance training was particularly beneficial in those who were older and more physically mature. Not surprisingly, those who trained longer and performed more sets also had higher strength gains. According to the National Strength and Conditioning Association, kids as young as 7 or 8 can do strength training exercises as long as they can follow instructions and can perform the exercises safely. Other benefits aside from muscle strength include bone building, improving balance, and increasing body awareness.

Bivalent Is Best

9 Vaccine With Two Polio Strains Best Protection

One dose of a vaccine that protects against type 1 and type 3 poliovirus concurrently offers better protection that ones with only one or even three strains, according to a new study. A four month study conducted in 2008 involving 830 newborns in India vaccinated with either a monovalent, bivalent or trivalent vaccine at birth and 30 days later had their antibodies levels measured. The bivalent vaccine induced greater immunity against polioviruses types 1 and 3 and data suggests the bivalent vaccine is decreasing the rates of polio, from 260 cases last year down to 32 in 2010. The two types are still around in Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Nigeria. Researchers are excited about the vaccines part in eradicating polio worldwide, but funding is the major challenge to making it a reality.
