It’s Not Just for Headaches

1 Botox Approved to Treat Chronic Migraines

Botox, first used to relieve muscle spasms, is now commonly used to ease facial wrinkles, stop excessive underarm sweating and to counteract strabismus or abnormal alignment of the eyes. This week, the US Food and Drug Administration approved Botox injections to prevent chronic migraine headaches in adult patients. Chronic headaches are defined as occurring more than 14 days a month. To treat migraine, Botox is injected every 12 weeks around the neck and head and is said to dull headache symptoms. The drug has not been shown to work for patients whose headaches occur fewer than 14 days per month. Chronic migraine “can greatly affect family, work, and social life, so it is important to have a variety of effective treatment options available,” says the FDA’s Russell Katz, M.D.

Increases Mortality Risk Too

2 Hormone Replacement Increases Breast Cancer Risk

A new Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) report indicates that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) increases a postmenopausal woman’s risk of developing invasive breast cancer as well as increasing her risk of death from breast cancer. "This report, which expands on earlier results of the WHI study, followed these women for an average of 11 years," says researcher Jean Wactawski-Wende. "The data show that, with further follow-up, there remains an increased incidence of breast cancer in women taking estrogen plus progestin. The study, which included 40 US clinical centers, was based on 12,788 women and showed that combined HRT increases the incidence of invasive breast cancer and that, often, the cancer spreads to the lymph nodes, indicating a poorer prognosis.

Choosing Hair over Erections

3 Baldness Drug May Cause Sexual Problem

Finasteride (Propecia), a drug taken for hair loss, may cause erectile dysfunction in some men, say researchers who analyzed 12 studies involving 3,927 men. The popular baldness drug works for creating new hair growth, research found. Patients taking the drug experienced a 30 percent improvement in hair growth over two years. However, the drug may also cause erectile dysfunction in one in 80 men. Researchers say that some men choose hair over erections! MSNBC reports that men experiencing sexual side effects from finasteride were not more likely to stop taking the drug. The analysis of sexual side effects from taking finasteride was published in Archives of Dermatology.

100 Percent Whole Wheat

4 Diet High in Whole Grains Linked to Lower Body Fat

People who consume whole grains over refined have less of a type of body fat tissue that is linked to triggering cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Researchers from Tufts University have found that visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is approximately 10 percent lower in adults who reported eating three or more daily servings of whole grains and who limit intake of refined grains to less than one serving per day, said author Nicola McKeown PhD. Visceral fat is the type of body fat that surrounds the intra-abdominal organs is is closely tied to the development of metabolic syndrome, a cluster of risk factors including hypertension, insulin resistance and abnormal cholesterol levels that can lead to heart disease and diabetes. Little Miss Sunshine

5 5 Reasons to Spend More Time Outdoors

According to a study conducted in 2009 by the US Environmental Protection Agency, the typical American spends 90 percent of their time indoors. However, the editors of the Harvard Health Letter stress that there are at least 5 health benefits from spending more time outside. First, vitamin D levels are increased as the skin is exposed to sunshine, reducing risk of some chronic diseases such as cancer and osteoporosis. Second, being outside is an invitation to be more active, especially for children. Third, research indicates that sunlight tends to elevate the mood. Fourth, time in nature appears to improve concentration particularly in those with ADHD. And last, natural light may help the body heal faster and experience less pain and stress.

A Balance of Sun and Diet Needed

6 Low Vitamin D Common in Skin Cancer Patients

Vitamin D is the only nutrient the body can make on its own by converting sunlight into the active form. A deficiency in vitamin D has been linked to some chronic health conditions including osteoporosis, autoimmune diseases, and obesity. Researchers from Stanford University have also found that skin cancer patients are about three times more likely to be deficient in Vitamin D than the general populations, leading doctors to find a balance between appropriate levels of sun exposure and avoidance of low blood levels of the nutrient. Dermatologists suggest that while short-term exposure such as exercising outdoors or walking to work is “reasonable”, patients should actively monitor vitamin D blood levels and take dietary supplements if necessary.

The Obesity and Memory Link

7 Insulin Sensitivity Affects Obesity and Memory

A new study links insulin resistance with obesity and memory. Adults aged 40 to 60 years completed a task while having an MRI to look at brain function. Both obese and normal-weight participants did equally well on the task, but obese adults had a lower brain function in a certain area of the brain and lower insulin sensitivity compared to their normal-weight peers. Insulin affects people’s metabolism and cognitive abilities, so impaired sensitivity may mediate cognitive decline later in life and often goes hand in hand with obesity. The research group conducting the study uses brain imaging to pinpoint risk factors that could lead to cognitive decline as people age. The next study will be conducted to determine if a 12 week exercise regimen reverses these differences in brain function.
