1 Mediterranean Diet Good for Older Diabetics

Older adults who follow the Mediterranean diet may have a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, according to new research reported in the journal Diabetes Care. For the study, Spanish researchers followed 418 initially diabetes-free adults between the ages of 55 and 80. The participants were divided between a group that either followed a standard low fat diet or followed a traditional Mediterranean diet, which is high in vegetables, fiber-rich grains, legumes, fish and plant-based sources of unsaturated fat -- particularly olive oil and nuts -- while being low in red meat and high-fat dairy, prime sources of saturated fat. Over the next four years, 18% of those eating a low-fat diet developed diabetes, compared to 10 to 11 percent of the participants eating a Mediterranean-style diet.

2 Walking Prevents Brain Shrinkage, Memory Decline

Being sedentary is a known risk factor for chronic conditions such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. New research is also linking physical inactivity with brain health. In a study of nearly 300 older adults (two thirds women), researchers from the University of Pittsburgh found that walking the equivalent of about six miles a week resulted in less brain shrinkage, as measured by high-resolution MRI, leading to protection against memory problems and cognitive decline. “Just by walking regularly, you can reduce your likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease,” said lead author Kirk Erickson, “There’s plenty of evidence now…that shows we can retain our brain tissue and retain our memories well into late adulthood by maintaining an active and engaged lifestyle.”

3 Many Cancers May Be Caused by Pollution and Diet

Researchers from England have been studying Egyptian mummies and have found that cancer at the time that they lived was extremely rare, leading to the presumption that cancer is a man-made disease brought about by environmental and lifestyle factors such as pollution and poor diet. Writing in the journal Nature, investigators studied hundreds of mummies and came across just one case of cancer, even when going as far back as the period of the dinosaurs. Evidence of cancer does not appear until the 17th century, says Professor Michael Zimmerman, one of the study’s lead authors. The extreme rarity of cancer could not be contributed to shorter life spans, as the researchers did find diseases of old age, such as atherosclerosis and osteoporosis.

4 Study Confirms Compressions Best for Heart Attacks

A study examining the results of three randomized trials involving over 3,000 people has confirmed previous studies suggesting that chest-compression only CPR (COCPR) increases the likelihood a heart attack victim will survive. Victims who had COCPR had a 14 percent survival rate compared to the 12 percent survival rate of individuals who got the standard mouth-to-mouth. This translated into a 22 percent increase in relative chance of survival in those who received COCPR. The major advantage of telling bystanders to only do chest compressions is that they are easier which increases the chances that a person will step in and help a heart attack victim. The American and Austrian research team stated that “continuous, uninterrupted chest compressions may be the key to successful CPR.”

Test All 23 Pairs of Chromosomes

5 Method to Determine Best Eggs Yields Three Babies

A technique that tests eggs to determine if there are chromosomal defects that may increase the risk of a miscarriage has resulted in three healthy babies. In Germany, twin girls were born in June and in September a boy was born in Italy. The technique is called microarray comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) that determines if there are too many or too few chromosomes that end up in “polar bodies,” which means the eggs should not be used. CGH tests all 23 pairs, differentiating it from other test. The cell is taken during fertilization of the egg instead of from an embryo, which would get around laws that do not allow embryo testing. By determining which eggs to use, IVF doctors are less likely to implant multiple embryos that may lead to health problems.
