1 Proper Sleep Better for Fat Loss, Hunger Control

A good night’s sleep benefits dieters by increasing fat loss and reducing hunger, finds a new study. Participants were put on a calorie-restricted diet and each was studied twice for two-week periods. During the first two weeks, participants slept an average of 7 1/2 hours vs. 5 1/4 hours for the second two weeks but kept calorie consumption and activity levels steady throughout the entire month. During the weeks with adequate sleep, volunteers lost 3.1 pounds of fat and 3.3 pounds of body mass versus losing an average of 1.3 pounds of fat and 5.3 pounds of muscle mass when they received less sleep. They also produced higher levels of ghrelin, a hunger-triggering hormone, when sleep was restricted and reported feeling less hungry when they received enough sleep.

2 Heart Problems Increase with Noise at Work

We know that working in a noisy environment can be bad for your ears, but did you know it could be bad for your heart, too? According to a study conducted by Gan Wenqi of the University of British Columbia, people who spend at least a year and half working in a noisy place could have triple the risk of serious heart problems compared to people who work in quieter places. For the study, the definition of a noisy workplace was if you had to raise your voice to have a conversation. Martin Halle, a University of Munich professor not associated with Gan’s study, says constant noise could evolve into a trigger for a heart event. He also stated that while noise can be considered a heart risk factor, it’s still more important to face other risks to the heart, like quitting smoking.

More Sex Hormone for Memory

3 Low Testosterone and Alzheimer's

Having low testosterone has been linked with Alzheimer's disease in older men, report researchers from the University of Hong Kong and Saint Louis University. The researchers learned that men with low levels of the male sex hormone were more vulnerable to Alzheimer's disease. John E. Morley, M.D., study co-investigator from Saint Louis University, says that the take-home message is that doctors should pay more attention to low testosterone, especially in patients with memory problems or cognitive impairment. "It's a very exciting study because we've shown that a low level of testosterone is one of the risk factors for Alzheimer's disease," Morley comments. The study findings were published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease.

4 Compressions Best for Heart Attack Victims

New research in Arizona demonstrates that compression-only cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (COCPR) is better than the traditional mouth-to-mouth or CPR for heart attack victims, even when provided by someone who has no medical training. A study involving 4,415 patients over 18 who had heart attacks outside of a hospital from January 2005 to December 2009 was conducted. The survival rate for those who only got compressions was 13.3 percent, while those who had mouth-to-mouth and no CPR had rates of 7.8 and 5.2 percent, respectively. The study was the product of a program Arizona created in 2005 with the goal of increasing survival rates of individual who had heart attacks outside settings such as hospitals that include the equipment and personnel qualified to deal with such situations.

Sleep Makes Sleek

5 Sleeping Longer Makes Weight Loss Easier

A study done at the University of Chicago suggests that sleeping longer will allow people to lose more weight. Ten overweight but otherwise healthy volunteers aged 35 to 49 ate a diet containing 90 percent of the calories that allowed them to maintain their weight with no exercise. They slept for 8.5 hours for two weeks and 5.5 hours for two weeks. Over 50 percent of the body weight they lost was fat when they slept 8.5 hours, while most of the 25 percent lost with 5.5 hours of sleep was muscle. With less sleep, levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin increased, which made it difficult to diet. Their diets were strictly controlled, so even when hungrier due to lack of sleep, they could not eat more food, but if they had access to additional food, they likely would have eaten more.
