South Asians Beware of Kidney

2 South Asian Kidney Transplants Affecting the Heart

A new study has revealed that South Asians are at a higher risk of contracting heart problems after kidney transplants when compared to populations outside South Asia. Dr Ramesh Prasad, a nephrologist, told CNN that he tracked 800 Canadians, 139 of whom were South Asian and during his study it was discovered that 4.4 out of 100 South Asians who had a kidney transplants died after a major cardiac arrest if it occurred within one year of the transplant. Other groups studied showed only 1.3 out of 100 deaths occurred in other ethnic groups. The study according to Dr. Milan Gupta of McMaster University showcases why ethnic based health understanding is important for surgical practices. The study specifically showcases why all Asian groups should not be lumped together for surgery practices.

Time to Help Those Who Helped

3 One Step Closer to Health Bill for Heroes

The James Zadroga 9/11 Health Bill is one step closer to being a reality after winning approval from the U.S. House with a 268-160 vote. While the Senate hasn’t voted on the bill yet, President Obama said, “I look forward to Congress completing consideration of this legislation so I can sign it into law." The goal of the bill is to provide free medical coverage for responders and survivors who were exposed to toxins after the attacks on September 11, 2001 and is named after a 34 year-old NYPD detective who died in January 2006 from respiratory failure caused by working in the toxic plume at ground zero. New York Republican Rep. Peter King told first responders who joined him and other representatives, "What we did was what we had to do. What you did was what you volunteered to do."

Mom Was Right

4 Gargling with Salt Water Really Helps with Colds

Mom was right, according to Dr. Philip T. Hagen, editor in chief of the new book, “Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies.” A study published in The American Journal of Preventive Medicine in 2005 indicates that, in addition to drawing excess fluid from inflamed tissues, a saline solution can also remove allergens, bacteria and fungi from the throat. In the study, researchers followed 400 healthy volunteers for 60 days during cold and flu season, with some of the volunteers being instructed to gargle 3 times a day. Results show those who regularly gargled had an almost 40% decrease in upper respiratory tract infections and gargling tended to reduce bronchial symptoms when they did get sick. Winter’s approaching so make sure to thank your mom the next time you do the salt-water gargle.

Baby Sleeping Device Is Deadly

5 Sleep Positioners Unsafe to Use

Parents should stop using infant sleep positioners, say experts from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). While the sleep positioners are marketed as being helpful against gastroesophageal reflux disease and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), the products pose a great risk to infant safety, reports MSNBC. Safety experts believe that the devices shouldn't be sold. The joint statement from the CPSC and FDA states that "deaths and dangerous situations" resulting from the use of the sleep positioners are a serious concern. In 13 years, there have been 12 infant suffocation deaths attributed to the sleep positioners.

No Sweat

6 French Dislike Gyms

Working up a sweat in the gym isn't part of mainstream French culture. Just 5.4 percent of French citizens belonged to a fitness club in 2008, reports Yahoo News. In comparison, 9.5 percent of people in Italy belonged to a health club, 11.9 percent in the United Kingdom and 16.6 percent in Spain. Rather than sweating inside a stuffy gym, French people generally prefer outdoor activities, such as tennis or cycling. Paris-focused Club Med Gym hasn't opened a new fitness club in almost a decade, but in 2011 they will open the doors to a new club in Paris. It seems that working out has an image problem in France. According to Yahoo News, few celebrities in France endorse activities like working out on a cardio machine. Some French people even disliked seeing President Nicolas Sarkozy jogging!

Big Problem, Little Research

7 Unexplained Male Infertility Could Be Genetic

Mutations of the NR5A1 gene may explain some cases of male infertility, say scientists from the Pasteur Institute in France and University College London. The mutations in the NR5A1 gene were discovered in a small percentage of infertile men. Study findings, published in the American Journal of Human Genetics, suggest that even in the absence of physical evidence of a fertility problem, defects in the NR5A1 gene might interfere with a man's ability to make sperm. The scientists believe that about 4 percent of men with unexplained inability to make sperm have mutations in the NR5A1 gene. Even though male infertility makes up around half of the cases of couples having trouble conceiving, surprisingly little is known about the genetics of male infertility.

20 Percent Increase in Survival

8 New Therapy for Neuroblastoma Increases Cure Rate

A new therapy that includes the standard drug isotretinoin increases the survival rate of kids with neuroblastoma by 20 percent, according to a new study. The 226 patients involved in the study either received isotretinoin alone or in combination with an antibody that target a substance on cancer cells and interleukin-2 to boost the immune system’s response. The patients were followed for two years and about 54 percent of those on the standard treatment alone relapsed compared to only 34 percent on the experimental immunotherapy regiment. The children receiving the experimental regimen experienced more side effects such as pain. This immunotherapy treatment is the standard of treatment by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia since preliminary results were released in June 2009.

Against Cancer, for Conception

9 IUD Treats Uterine Cancer and Maintains Fertility

A new study conducted in Europe suggests that an intrauterine device (IUD) that delivers hormones to fight uterine cancer has been shown to stop and even shrink the cancer. For women of childbearing age, they were able to conceive before having a curative hysterectomy. Thirty-nine women ages 20 to 40 with early uterine cancer were fitted with an IUD that released a constant amount of progesterone-like hormone to stopped the cancer. It remained in for a year and all 39 women are alive at that point and 9 were able to have kids once it was removed. They did have hysterectomies after having kids. The IUD also avoided most of the side effects giving the drugs oral such as rashes, nausea and vomiting. These results have prompted a call for larger studies around the world.
