Due to Heart Attack Risk

1 Avandia Restricted in a Worldwide Effort

Avandia, the diabetes drug manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, has been restricted in the US and completely suspended from being sold in Europe due to the risk of heart attack. According to one study, more than 47,000 people taking Avandia between 1999 and 2009 suffered a heart attack, stroke or died. The FDA’s decision to restrict the drug to patients whose doctors say they’re aware of the risks and have tried all other diabetes drugs unsuccessfully, indicates the Obama administration is taking a harder line on drug safety issues and ushers in a new era of drug testing prior to gaining FDA approval. The restrictions will take months to be enforced and doctors say that patients currently taking Avandia should continue to do so until they speak with their doctors.

Phone Is Life Changing

2 Blind Can Use iPhone with VoiceOver

People who are legally blind can still take advantage of Apple's iPhone with VoiceOver activated, and one blind reviewer writing at Atlantic says the iPhone has changed his life forever. Austin Seraphin, who is legally blind, can see some blurs of light and color. He says that the iPhone changed his life within 24 hours with "unparalleled access to properly made applications." With the iPhone, Seraphin can look up the weather, receive text messages and have access to stock charts. With the Color Identifier app, Seraphin can also use the iPhone's camera to get descriptions of the colors around him! Some color descriptions include "Horizon" and "Outer Space." He believes that hearing the color names gives his perception a "nudge," increasing his visual experience.

Converts to Sexy Face Mask

3 A Bra That Will Save Your Life in Case of Attack

Should you ever be in a situation where you would need a face mask to filter out harmful airborne particles, look no further than the lady next to you wearing the “Emergency Bra”. Dr. Elena Bodnar has created a brassiere that can be “quickly converted into a pair of protective face masks” in the event of an emergency. She has won the Ig Nobel Public Health Prize in 2009 for her lingerie invention. The idea came to her after studying the effects of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster. She says that if people had masks readily available within the first hours of the disaster, they could have avoided breathing Iodine-131 which ultimately causes radiation sickness. The life-saving bra can be purchased for the low price of $29.95 at http://ebbra.com.

Targets Side Effects on the CNS

4 Ritalin May Help Childhood Cancer Survivors

Drugs like Ritalin may help childhood cancer survivors who often develop long term problems with thinking, memory, attention span, behavior and school performance because of treatments that often target the central nervous system. A study of 122 children treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia and brain cancer that subsequently developed difficulties with learning and attention was conducted to determine if Ritalin would help. There was a greater improvement in attention, behavior and social skills in about 50 percent of the kids given Ritalin compared to the untreated control group. Data on school performance was not clear as improvement in reading, math and spelling did not differ between the groups. This study does not indicate all childhood cancer survivors should take the drug.

Activation Repairs DNA Damage

5 Novel Pathway Related to Cancer Development Found

Scientists have identified a cell signaling pathway linked to the development of several types of cancer when not functioning properly. This pathway is part of what is called a “global DNA damage response,” which is activated when DNA is damaged. This response either temporarily or permanently halts cells from growing and dividing or causes them to die. This pathway turns off 136 genes, including some that promote cancer development. When this pathway is defective, the damaged cells end up driving very rapidly and result in cancers like lymphoma and leukemia. The diabetes drug Metformin activates this pathway, and individuals on the drug have lower incidences of lymphoma and leukemia. This discovery will also help develop new anticancer drugs that activate this pathway.

Insulin Resistance Decreased

6 Magnesium May Decrease Risk of Developing Diabetes

A 20 year study suggests that consuming magnesium in the diet and supplements will decrease the risk of developing diabetes by almost half. Four thousand four hundred and ninety seven men and women 18 to 30 years old were followed for 20 years. During that period, 330 of the volunteers developed diabetes. Those who took about 200 milligrams of magnesium per 1,000 calories had a 47 percent reduced chance of developing diabetes compared to people who consumed the least amount. As magnesium increased, pro-inflammatory markers and insulin resistance decreased. Similar results were seen in those with higher blood levels of the mineral. Previous studies have yielded conflicting results, but more large scale studies to better understand the why and how of these results are needed.
