Few Polyphenols Present

1 Bottled Tea Not As Healthy As Home Brewed

Think your bottled tea is good for you? A new study finds that many popular bottled teas contain such small amounts of polyphenols, antioxidants linked to health benefits, that you’d have to drink 20 bottles to get the same nutrients in one cup of home brewed tea. For the study, researchers analyzed six teas and found that many of them also had high sugar contents. "Polyphenols are bitter and astringent, but to target as many consumers as they can, manufacturers want to keep the bitterness and astringency at a minimum," said researcher Shiming Li explained. "The simplest way is to add less tea, which makes the tea polyphenol content low but tastes smoother and sweeter." Li hopes his research will encourage manufacturers to provide accurate nutritional information to consumers.

Get Your Electric Taters!

2 Boosting Antioxidants in Potatoes

Scientists from Japan discovered they can increase the amounts of antioxidants in potatoes by using either electric shock or ultrasound. They utilized ultrasound or electricity for five to 30 minutes to increase antioxidants like phenols and chlorogenic acid by up to 50 percent, says research leader Kazunori Hironaka, Ph.D. with Obihiro University. Antioxidants are considered helpful for prevention of chronic diseases like diabetes. For the ultrasound treatment, whole potatoes were immersed in water and treated with ultrasound for 5 or 10 minutes. The electrical treatment consisted of immersing potatoes in a salty solution for 10 seconds, then treating them with a small electrical charge for up to 30 minutes. Hironaka shared findings today at a meeting of the American Chemical Society.

Sledding in Streets Unwise

3 Thousands of Sledding Injuries Occur Each Year

An average of more than 20,000 sledding injuries occur each year, say researchers from the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Researchers learned that in the 10-year period from 1997 to 2007, an estimated 229,023 kids and adolescents under 19 years old were seen in the ER in U.S. hospitals for injuries related to sledding. Patients who sustained injuries while sledding on a highway or street were more likely to experience a traumatic brain injury than people injured while sledding in other areas. Study co-author, Lara McKenzie, PhD, says that you can reduce your risk of injuries by sledding in areas free of trees and other obstacles with ample run-out areas away from streets. Findings are published in Pediatrics.

Didn't Burn off Her Fat

4 Woman Loses Legal Battle Against Enviga

The New Jersey District Court has denied a motion by plaintiff Linda Franulovic that challenged the claims made by Coca-Cola and Nestle-owned Enviga, a green tea extract-based beverage that promises to burn calories. The plaintiff made the charge because, after drinking 3 cans a day for two months (as per the company’s advertisement) she failed to lose weight and, in fact, gained weight. The company’s website claims the beverage can increase calorie burning by 60-100 calories per day in healthy normal weight 18-35 year olds when used as a part of a reduced calorie diet and regular exercise. Enviga contains EGCG, thought to raise metabolism. The court dismissed the woman’s claims because she had not accurately documented her weight loss or gain while attempting to consume Enviga.

Negative Lifestyle Factors

5 Obese Teens More Likely to Have Headaches

Teenagers who are overweight, get little exercise or who smoke are 3.4 times more likely to have frequent headaches than those with healthier behaviors, according to research conducted at the University of Oslo in Norway. When factors were taken individually, overweight teens were 40 percent more likely to have frequent headaches and those who exercised less than twice a week were 20 percent more likely. Teens who smoked had 50 percent more headaches than non-smokers. Those with two of the three negative lifestyle factors were 1.8 times more likely to have headaches and 55 percent of those with all three factors had frequent headaches. The study was published in a journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

100 Percent Effective

6 Vaccine Against Hepatitis E Highly Effective

A recombinant vaccine developed in China against hepatitis E was 100 percent effective. In the provinces of Jiangsu, 48,000 healthy people aged 16-65 were given three doses over six months, while another group received a placebo. There were monitored for a year and 15 who got the placebo developed hepatitis E, but none of those who were vaccinated did. Hepatitis E infection results when water supplies are contaminated by feces. Individuals who only got two doses were also protected. Nin-Shao Xia, of the Institute of Diagnostic and Vaccine Development in Infectious Diseases in Xiamen pointed out the advantage of this and said "During a hepatitis E outbreak, or for travelers to an endemic area, protection can be quickly obtained by two vaccine doses given within one month."
