CVS, Walmart, More Have BPA

1 BPA Found on Receipts

BPA (Bisphenol A), an endocrine disruptor, has been found on 40 percent of register receipts from businesses, reports CNN. The Environmental Working Group's commissioned lab study revealed that the thermal receipt paper used by many big businesses like McDonald's contains high levels of the chemical. Levels of BPA discovered on the receipts were 250 to 1,000 higher than BPA found inside baby bottles and canned foods. Other companies with receipts that contain BPA include Whole Foods, Walmart, CVS Pharmacy, KFC, U.S. Postal Service and Safeway. Starbucks, Target and Bank of America ATM receipts were BPA-free receipts or had trace amounts of BPA. More studies are needed on the dangers of skin exposure to BPA, but one recent Swiss study suggests it absorbs easily and is difficult to wash off.

Fur Loss and Undersized Penises

2 Hormone Spray Can Affect Kids and Pets

Kids and pets inadvertently exposed to estrogen sprays used by women to relieve hot flashes may suffer effects like premature puberty and nipple enlargement, says MSNBC. This week, the FDA issued a warning that exposure to estrogen spray may cause premature puberty in kids. They've received eight reports of boys and girls ages 3 to 5 developing nipple swelling and breast enlargement when exposed to the spray. Pets coming in contact with estrogen spray have developed nipple enlargement or swelling of the vulva. Dogs and cats that lick the cream, gel or spray from an owner's skin or become exposed during petting have developed fur loss and undersized penises. Women using estrogen products should cover the area with clothing or avoid letting others have direct contact with medicated area.

Will Doc Text You?

3 Texting May Help Teens with Diabetes

Receiving text messages as reminders about diabetes treatment and care may help keep teens on track to properly managing the disease, finds a researcher from Nationwide Children's Hospital. Jennifer Dyer, MD, MPH, an endocrinologist at the hospital, completed a pilot study to test the effect of sending customized text messages each week reminding adolescents about their personal treatment routines for diabetes. Teens are less likely to adhere to treatment plans, but Dyer found that teens receiving text messages about their treatments responded with improved blood glucose levels after better adherence to treatments. Dyer said that texts allow for "... real-time health management which is extremely valuable for patients that suffer from a chronic illness like diabetes."

Escargot Anyone?

4 Sea Snail Saliva May Treat Severe Pain

Scientists in Australia have isolated the saliva of sea snails and created a new medication that they believe could be taken in pill form to relieve the most severe forms of pain as effectively as morphine, but without the risk of developing an addiction. One expert speculates that such a drug could revolutionize the treatment of pain. Senior editor of Chemical and Engineering News Bethany Halford noted that a sea snail’s saliva contains chemicals that help the slow-moving creatures catch prey. The snails inject these with hypodermic-needle-like teeth that shoot from their mouths like harpoons. Scientists have already transformed one of these chemicals into a pain-reliever for humans, but it currently has to be injected directly into the spinal cord.

Bone and Cartilage Regenerated

5 Stem Cells Develop into Cartilage and Bone

Researchers were showed that stem cells could develop into bone and cartilage to produce a functional joint in rabbits. Ten rabbits had their thigh joint removed. Scaffolding made of materials compatible with tissues was implanted. Stem cells were directed to the area where the joint was removed and cartilage and bone were regenerated. They were able to resume normal movement within four weeks, a first in medicine. Because humans walk on two legs, older adults may have condition and take drugs that impair regeneration, and the time a joint is regenerating would be risky, many hurdles have to be overcome before this is done in humans. But Patrick Warnke of Australia's Bond University commented that this study "offers a promising insight into what might be on the horizon."

Damp Smell Trouble for the Nose

6 Damp Houses Raises Risk of Nasal Allergies in Kids

A six year study in Finland involving about 19,000 kids showed that those who lived in homes that were damp or had mold were more likely to have nasal allergies. Parents who initially reported mold or water damage had kids who were 55 percent more likely to develop allergies. Over the six years, 16 percent of kids who lived in houses that reported dampness eventually developed allergies compared to 12 percent whose homes did not. Other factors were taken into account, yet dampness and mold remained as the primary factors for increasing a child’s risk of developing nasal allergies. Dampness allows dust mites a fungus to grow and attracts cockroaches; all three are known allergens. Researchers recommend parents watch out for dampness and mold and have repairs done as soon as possible.
