1 Beach Umbrellas Only Offer Some Sun Protection

Think your beach umbrella protects you from the sun’s rays? A U of Valencia study, which found that 34 percent of UV radiation filters through under beach umbrellas, cautions you to think again. While canvas has a high capacity to absorb radiation, it can’t prevent diffuse radiation from penetrating through. Researchers hope this study can shed light on the epidemiology of some skin cancers as well as photoaging, cataracts, and other ailments caused by sun exposure. While scientists know that some sun exposure is beneficial, especially for the production of Vitamin D, experts recommend using umbrellas, protective clothing, hats with wide brims, sunglasses and sunscreen to lessen the damage from sun exposure. Try to avoid the sun between noon and 4 pm when it’s most damaging.

2 Cell Phone Use May Increase Risk of Tinnitus

Prolonged use of a cell phone may double the risk of developing tinnitus, a persistent ringing or hissing in the ear, finds research published in Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Analysis of studies of 100 tinnitus patients found that people who used a cell phone regularly for at least four years before the onset of tinnitus were 37 percent more likely to have the condition than people who didn’t use a cell phone. Cell phone users who used theirs for an average of ten minutes a day were 71 percent more likely to have tinnitus than those who don’t use a cell phone. "Considering all potential biases and confounders, it is unlikely that the increased risk of tinnitus from prolonged mobile phone use obtained in this study is spurious," write the authors.

3 Fewer Than One-Third of Men See a Doctor for ED

More than half of men over the age of 40 are affected by erectile dysfunction. Yet, fewer than 30 percent seek medical help, finds Professor Mike Kirby whose research appears in The Journal for Sexual Medicine. In an observational study of 11,889 men across Europe to learn how men suffering from ED obtained a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor such as Viagra or Cialis, Kirby found that approximately one-third of them ordered it via the internet without seeing a physician. Kirby estimates that about six million men have circumvented the healthcare system to treat their ED, but cautions against using unapproved medical treatments and foregoing “medical followup for unrecognized cardiovascular disease often seen in combination with ED."

Capsaicin Ingredient Kicks Fat

4 Chili Pepper Ingredient Fights Fat in Body

Capsaicin, the stuff in chili pepper that makes it spicy, can also enable weight loss and fight fat buildup, say researchers writing in the American Chemical Society's Journal of Proteome Research. According to the new study, capsaicin works against fat by triggering beneficial protein changes inside your body. Lab rats fed capsaicin lost 8 percent of their body weight. The rats also experienced changes in about 20 key proteins found in fat. The finding could lead to new treatments for obesity. Yet, researchers aren't sure how capsaicin triggers weight loss. Studies done in laboratories have shown that capsaicin may possibly work by decreasing calories taken in, shrinking fat and lowering fat levels in the blood.
