Not Just a Problem of Elderly

1 Swallowing Difficulties Can Be Deadly

Swallowing difficulties result in tens of thousands of deaths per year say Drs. Roya Sayadi and Joel Herskowitz who want to alert the public to this little recognized problem which can cause death not only from choking, but from pneumonia well as from malnutrition. "Many of these deaths can be prevented," said Sayadi, if only people know what to look out for and what to do when they encounter a problem.” To this end, the husband-wife team wrote Swallow Safely: How Swallowing Problems Threaten the Elderly and Others. A Caregiver's Guide to Recognition, Treatment, and Prevention. It’s not just an elderly problem says Herskowitz. "Many persons with Parkinson disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer disease, stroke, cancer, or congestive heart failure are also vulnerable."

Call for Universal Reduction

2 Cutting Salt Reduces CV Deaths

Salt restriction should be practiced universally, says researcher Dieter Klaus, whose findings indicate that this will lower the risk of cardiovascular death. One in two deaths in western industrialized nations is due to CV disease. Consuming more than 6 grams of salt per day increases the risk of hypertension and CV morbidity. The average person consumes between 8 and 12 grams of sodium per day and, says Klaus, besides preventing CV deaths, restricting salt may also counteract lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and obesity. Klaus and his colleagues say that lowering the salt content of processed foods by between 40 and 50 percent will result in reducing an individual’s daily intake to five to six grams per day. His research is published in Deutsches Ärzteblatt International.

Think Yourself Off

3 Can Orgasm Be Achieved Just by Thinking?

"I think there's a market for a DVD or class to learn and study this approach to intimacy"
- Valeria Davenport in the comments

Barbara Carellas has been achieving orgasms just by thinking - and she wants to teach you how to “think yourself off” too. Carellas, who wanted to explore alternative sexuality, attended a workshop that taught her how to orgasm using only her mind. "I really like solo sex. I am not partner-fixated." she tells CBS News. Researchers at Rutgers University who’ve been studying the mind-body-sex connection have documented Carellas’ claims with MRIs. Sex therapist Dr. Ian Kerner says the connection is particularly strong in women for whom the brain is the most powerful sex organ. Men, he says, have a harder time climaxing without physical touch. But, “anyone can learn this,” says Carellas who will be featured on TLC this Sunday as part of their “Strange Sex” series.

Retail Ads Encourage Bad Habit

4 Ads Major Cause of Teen Smoking

Point-of-sale advertising is a big cause of teen smoking, finds a new study from Stanford University School of Medicine. The advertising works so well that Lisa Henriksen, senior research scientist at the Stanford Prevention Research Center, says that federal regulators should consider banning it from small grocery stores, convenience stores and gas stations, reports Science Daily. The study will be published in the August issue of Pediatrics. According to the research, students visiting retail outlets regularly were at least twice as likely to experiment with smoking compared to teens who didn't visit the stores frequently. Henriksen says that while the tobacco industry claims that ads only encourage smokers to switch brands, the ads are actually encouraging teens to begin smoking.

Cheney's New Heart Piece

5 Dick Cheney May Not Have a Pulse

Dick Cheney's new heart implant, a ventricular assist device, may mean he no longer has a pulse, says Gizmodo. The device, which prevents complete heart failure, pushes blood continuously rather than copying the heart's own pulsing beat. Blood enters the device from the left ventricle, then a rotor in the pump allows blood to flow continuously, pumping into the aorta and through the body. Bloggers and online commenters, as well as late-night comedians, are having fun at Cheney's expense. Some people are even calling the former VP "Darth Vader."

IVF and Cancer Risk

6 IVF Kids Have Slightly Increased Cancer Risk

Children conceived by in vitro fertilization appear to be at a slightly increased risk of cancer, according to a new study in Sweden. Total risk for cancer is 2 per 1,000 children, whereas in IVF kids it is 3 in 1,000. Thirty thousand IVF children were followed up and 53 developed cancer, when about 38 cases would be expected. Eighteen were blood cancers, most acute lymphoblastic leukemia, 15 were central nervous system cancers (7 brain tumors) and two had eye tumors. Six kids developed a rare condition called histiocytosis in which an excess of one type of white blood cell normally found in skin accumulates in the bones and other parts of the body. It is believed the increased risk of cancer is due to IVF, but due to things like being born prematurely and with respiratory problems.

Gel Cuts HIV Infection in Half

7 Vaginal Gel Decreases HIV Infection by Half

A study in South Africa in which 889 heterosexual women who were not considered at high risk for HIV infection who used a gel containing tenofovir reduced the risk of infection by 50% compared to those using a dummy gel. Women used it 12 hours before and after sex. Thirty-eight of those who used the tenofovir-containing gel were infected compared to 60 who used the dummy gel. Mild diarrhea was the only side effect reported and their partners did not mind the gel. For women whose partners will not use condoms, this is a major step forward in being able to protect themselves. The gel also cut infection with genital herpes, which is advantageous because other STDS increase the risk of HIV infection. The greatest cost is the applicator, which costs 32 cents.
