MLE Clamps Down on Endorsements

1 TV Commercial Income at Root of Nathan's Dispute

Japanese competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi has revealed to CalorieLab that the core issue preventing him from signing a contract with Major League Eating and participating in the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4 is MLE's demand that, starting this year, Kobayashi cease direct endorsement of products and only do endorsements obtained via MLE as agent. Kobayashi has always been restricted from participating in non-MLE events (which has locked him out of the Japanese competitive eating market where the MLE is not active), but he has been able to make a living by doing television commercials and appearances, and by licensing his likeness for such use. In the wake of receiving the sponsorship of Pepto Bismal for the 2010 Nathan's competition, MLE now wants to clamp down on eaters.

Prototype May Be Out in a Year

2 Car for Blind Drivers in Development

"Is this story from the Onion?"
- Stuart in the comments

A car that can be driven by the blind may be available soon, say researchers at Virginia Tech who plan to demonstrate a prototype by next year. The car, which understands its surroundings, uses “non-visual interfaces” to provide real time feedback of road conditions which it then delivers back to the driver. DriveGrip, one of the interfaces, employs gloves with vibrating grips to signal the driver where to turn. AirPix uses compressed air to create a “map” of road conditions. "We're exploring areas that have previously been regarded as unexplorable," said Dr. Marc Maurer, president of the National Federation of the Blind. "We're moving away from the theory that blindness ends the capacity of human beings to make contributions to society."

Wait, Those Are Mouse Turds!

3 Your Keyboard Can Cause Illness: "Qwerty Tummy"

You touch it daily, now learn how to clean the computer keyboard, which may contain germs, skin oils or even mouse feces. Stomach troubles picked up from computers have a special name: "qwerty tummy," taken from the upper left keys on a keyboard. In an article from TechNewsDaily, MSNBC explored proper keyboard hygiene. They suggest first checking your owner's manual for specific cleaning instructions. Most people can use isopropyl alcohol to kill keyboard germs, as well as an air duster to remove debris. Why go through this trouble? In addition to avoiding sickness, maintaining a crumb-free keyboard can also keep rodents away. MSNBC reports that one woman in London was confused about the "seeds" that kept popping out of her keyboard. The seeds turned out to be mouse fecal pellets!

Sleep Well or Buy New Pants

4 Sleep Problems Related to Weight Gain for Women

Women who have trouble sleeping may be more likely to gain weight, say Finnish researchers reporting their findings in the International Journal of Obesity. According to MSNBC, the new study strengthens evidence to support the idea that sleep problems are related to weight gain for women. Findings showed that sleep issues and weight gain aren't related for men. Researchers followed more than 7,300 adults ages 40 to 60 years old for seven years. They found that females who had significant sleep issues at the beginning of the study generally gained more weight over time than females without sleep problems. Around one-third of the women in the study who suffered frequent sleep problems put on at least 11 pounds, compared with only about a fifth of women without sleep problems.

Stem Cells Get to Root of HIV

5 Modified Blood Stems Cells May Protect Against HIV

A study in mice shows that haematopoietic stem cells that have a section of the CCR5 gene deleted slows down HIV. CCR5 is a receptor HIV uses to enter a cell so it can take over the cell’s machinery and start reproducing. There are people who are very resistant to becoming infected with HIV and take much longer to develop AIDS because a section of the CCR5 gene they carry is deleted. Some mice got the modified stem cells that produce immune and red blood cells and some did not. Both groups were exposed to HIV and twelve weeks later, animals that received the modified cells had immune systems and very low levels of the virus were present. If this technique works in humans, patients could fight off HIV without antiretroviral drugs that can have side effects and have to be taken for life.

Psychopaths Don’t Play Nice

6 Game Links Psychopathy and Brain Damage

A study of 47 prisoners, some psychopaths, and those with damage to a part of the brain involved in empathy and guilt, revealed that the psychopaths and those with damage to this particular part of the brain respond similarly when playing the “Ultimatum Game,” a game in which two people have to agree on how to split a certain amount of money or no one gets it. Psychopathic inmates got angry because they felt the offer was too low and were more likely to reject the offer. Michael Koenigs, assistant professor of psychiatry in the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, said "They're quick to anger, and they don't regret their bad treatment of others." Koenigs believes that this study suggests brain damage might be related to the development of psychopathic behavior.

High Oxygen, Fewer Wrinkles

7 Oxygen Protects from UVB Induced Wrinkles

Hairless mice that were placed in oxygen after being exposed to UVB rays three times a week for five weeks ended up with fewer wrinkles and less skin damage compared to those not placed in the oxygen chamber for two hours after being exposed, according to a study at the University of Tokyo. Wrinkles and thickened skin were observed in both groups, but to a lesser extent in the group that received oxygen treatment. More studies need to be done to determine if high levels of oxygen would do that same for people. The complete study can be found online in the American Journal of Physiology -- Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology.
