Mississippi 5-Peats

1 Fattest States for 2010 Announced

For 2010 Mississippi has claimed the title of fattest state for the fifth consecutive year, while Colorado continues its streak as the leanest. Maine rose the most places in the rankings over last year, while Oregon dropped the most, according to a new analysis by CalorieLab, Inc. In general, states in the West and New England rank lowest in the fattest states rankings, while states in the South and the Rust Belt tend to rank highest. CalorieLab releases its annual state obesity map and data table just before Independence Day every year. The CDC maintains a database of United States health information called the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, which includes body mass index data for all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Group Sex, Anyone?

2 Older Swingers Have High Risk of STIs

"We're swingers, and everyone we meet in the lifestyle always uses a condom"
- Bob & Sally in the comments

Swingers, straight couples who regularly switch sexual partners, have as high a risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection as other at-risk groups. This is especially true for those over the age of 45. Researchers base their findings on Dutch health records of 630,000 patients at three sexual health care clinics where 12 percent of the patients said they were swingers. Rates of STIs were highest for older swingers followed by those for gay men and young adults. Swingers are often overlooked by healthcare services and researchers consider them to be a “missed target.” Swinging is relatively widespread say researchers who believe that there are millions of swingers worldwide. "Potentially they [swingers] may act as an STI transmission bridge to the entire population."

3 Center for Troops with Brain Injuries Opens in MD

A $65 million medical center devoted exclusively to treating members of the military who’ve sustained brain injuries or suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other psychological disorders has opened in Bethesda, MD. Military records indicate that, since the onset of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, about 115,000 troops have suffered brain injuries and many do not receive proper medical care, according to criticism outlined in recent congressional reports. The new National Intrepid Center of Excellence is on the grounds of the National Naval Medical Center and offers services including advanced digital imaging technology. "It's a step in the right direction," said William J. Lynn, deputy undersecretary of Defense. "But we still face challenges in treating these wounds."

4 New Therapy for Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), a mental illness characterized by a significant dissatisfaction with one’s appearance, may result in social isolation, ritualized behaviors and, in extreme cases, suicide. Sufferers often seek the services of cosmetic doctors, dentists and aestheticians when “what they really need is psychological support and assistance,” says researcher Kieron O'Connor who, along with doctoral student Annie Taillon, developed a cognitive behavioral therapy to treat the symptoms of BDD. "We observed a clear decrease in appearance-related fixations among participants and a reduction by more than half in ritualized behaviors.” Researchers are currently seeking participants for their Montreal-based study. Schools Do Impact Health

5 School Program Lowers Obesity, Diabetes Risk

Healthier cafeteria choices plus longer, more intense periods of physical activity and dedicated school education programs can lower rates of obesity and other risk factors for type 2 diabetes according to a national study called HEALTHY. Researchers from the University of California Irvine conducted the study in 42 middle schools with high enrollments of low-income, minority children. Those in the intervention program were given more nutritious food choices, longer gym classes, and a number of school activities, including classroom instruction, that encouraged healthy behaviors. The findings, presented at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association, revealed that students who were overweight in the sixth grade had a 21 percent lower rate of obesity after the intervention.

Red Wine Good for the Eyes

6 Resveratrol May Prevent Some Blinding Diseases

Resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, grapes, and blueberries, may help stop out-of-control blood vessel growth in the eye that can lead to blinding eye diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in Americans over 50. In research published in the July issue of the American Journal of Pathology, scientists from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis found that mice given resveratrol had a slowing of a process called angiogenesis, or the formation of abnormal blood vessels, in the retina of the eye. Dr. Rajendra Apte, who led the research, said that the mouse model of macular degeneration is not identical to human eye disease, but further research may lead to new technologies for humans.
