Gel in Breast Implants Meant for Use in Mattresses

Breast implants made by a company in France may have are filled with a gel that was never approved for such use and have no protective barrier. Poly Implant Protheses (PIPs) were developed with a substance that was intended to be used in mattresses. Surgeons in France noticed that these implants were rupturing more quickly than others and reported their concerns to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. The agency has since said no more should be implanted and those that have not should be returned to the company. Doctors are recommending that women who have PIPs get an ultrasound within the next six months to look for any signs of weakness or rupture. If one has ruptured, they say that both implants should be removed.
