Little Pink Pill on Hold

1 Strike Against Female Libido Drug

"The sexist FDA advisory committee thinks that women are too stupid to make intelligent decisions about their own lives"
- Brock in the comments

Flibanserin, a drug intended to boost sexual desire in females, failed to gain acceptance from the Food and Drug Administration advisory committee on Friday. The flibanserin decision isn't final yet, but the FDA usually follows the advice of the committee, reports CNN. The advisory committee says that the drug, developed by Boehringer Ingelheim, isn't effective. According to Boehringer Ingelheim, women with low libido who weren't taking the drug had an average of 2.8 sexually satisfying events a month, compared with women taking flibanserin who had 4.5 such events in a month. However, the advisory committee believes that the drug's side effects outweigh its benefits. Around 15 percent of women taking flibanserin stopped the drug due to anxiety, dizziness, nausea and insomnia.

Six Cups of Tea Keeps Doc Away

2 Coffee and Tea Good for Heart

High and moderate tea consumption and moderate coffee consumption is good for the heart, say researchers in the Netherlands. According to study findings, people who consumed more than six cups of tea per day had a 36 percent lower risk of heart disease when compared to people who had less than one cup of tea a day. Also, consuming three to six cups of tea a day was linked with a 45 percent reduced risk of dying from heart disease when compared to those who drank less than one cup per day. Coffee drinkers who enjoyed two to four cups a day experienced a 20 percent lower risk of heart disease when compared to people having less than two cups or more than four cups. The research was published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology: Journal of the American Heart Association.

Uh-Oh SpaghettiO's!

3 15 Million Pounds of SpaghettiOs Recalled

A huge quantity of SpaghettiO's with meatballs from Campbell Soup Co. have been recalled due to concerns over improperly cooked meat, reports CBS News. The problem is blamed on a malfunctioning cooker at a Paris, Texas plant. While there have been no illnesses linked to eating the SpaghettiO's, Campbell spokesman Anthony Sanzio said the company is recalling certain lots made since December 2008 "out of an abundance of caution" since officials can't be sure exactly when the cooker malfunctioned. Since the cans of SpaghettiO's weren't heated properly, the product could spoil before its expiration date. Most of the recalled product has likely been consumed already, but about 35,000 recalled cases of SpaghettiO's with meatballs are currently on the market.

Vitamin D and Cancer Not Linked

4 Vitamin D Levels and Cancer Risk Independent

"The evidence is not particularly convincing. They took one vitamin D measurement and related this to the chances of getting an illness many years later."
- Peter in the comments

There is no link between higher levels of vitamin D and a decreased rate of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, endometrial, stomach, kidney, ovarian and pancreatic cancer according to a study that analyzed blood from 12,000 people in 10 studies. Previous studies had 33 years of follow up data on these people so it could be determined if they developed cancer. Lower levels of vitamin D did not increase the risk of cancer. Interestingly, an increase in pancreatic cancer was observed among people with high levels of vitamin D, raising the question about any association between them. Vitamin D is obtained through the sunlight and diet and is essential for bone health. The results of this study were published online June 18 issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Don’t Rest on These Implants

5 Gel in Breast Implants Meant for Use in Mattresses

Breast implants made by a company in France may have are filled with a gel that was never approved for such use and have no protective barrier. Poly Implant Protheses (PIPs) were developed with a substance that was intended to be used in mattresses. Surgeons in France noticed that these implants were rupturing more quickly than others and reported their concerns to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. The agency has since said no more should be implanted and those that have not should be returned to the company. Doctors are recommending that women who have PIPs get an ultrasound within the next six months to look for any signs of weakness or rupture. If one has ruptured, they say that both implants should be removed.

One Drug Two Respiratory Viruses

6 New Drug Fights Two Groups of Respiratory Viruses

A new drug developed by NexBio was designed to fight influenza, but studies in mice demonstrated it is effective in fighting another group of viruses that is a common cause of serious respiratory diseases in young children known as parainfluenza viruses. The drug, Fludase, was given to mice one hour before they were infected with the virus. It works by inactivating the receptors on cells that both viruses need to enter them, thereby preventing the virus from replicating. Scientists hope that this mechanism of action reduces the likelihood of the viruses developing drug resistance. Also, it can be given to people without having to determine if they have influenza or parainfluenza. NexBio will ask the Food and Drug Administration if they can test this drug in people with parainfluenza.
