1 Red Wine, Green Tea Stop Prostate Cancer Growth

Scientists may be on the trail of a giant advance in the treatment of prostate cancer, and the credit goes to polyphenols in red wine and green tea. Those powerful polyphenols, which are antioxidants, inhibit cancer growth. Now, scientists understand how the process works. According to a new report published in FASEB Journal, the antioxidants in green tea and red wine create a combined effect to stop a vital cell signaling pathway that's needed for prostate cancer to grow. The discovery may improve current treatments or lead to the development of new medications to stop or slow cancer. "As long as they are taken in moderation, all signs show that red wine and green tea may be ranked among the most potent 'health foods' we know," says Dr. Gerald Weissmann of FASEB Journal.

Scientists have used the popular Activision video game “Guitar Hero III” in a study that found that sleep duration has a significant impact on performance accuracy of a complex motor-learning task. The research team from Trent University in Ontario, Canada studied 15 college students, 13 women and 2 men, who played one of two songs after a night of sleep and again one week later after a similar amount of daytime wakefulness. After a night of sleep, the students reached an accuracy level of 68% compared to 61% after a 12-hour period of being awake. Principle investigator Kevin Peters PhD says that the results indicate that sleep can help consolidate the skills people encounter in their daily lives. The results of the study were presented at SLEEP 2010 in San Antonio.

Genetics and Vitamin D Levels

3 Three Genes Associated with Vitamin D Deficiency

Differences in genes involved in making cholesterol and metabolizing and transporting vitamin D likely explain why some people are still deficient even when they are getting a sufficient amount of the vitamin through diet and sunlight exposure, according to researchers in Britain and the U.S. This conclusion was made after the genes of 34,000 white Europeans were studied. Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption and bone health. Recent studies have linked vitamin D to a decreased risk of arterial diseases and certain cancer. Almost 50 percent of people worldwide are deficient in this essential vitamin and scientists say it is getting worse as people spend less time outdoors and covering up after being out in the sun for only a short time.
