From the Urban Legend Archives

1 Vodka Tampons Destroy the Vagina

Last week's "vodka eyeballing" stories reminded us of a similar spate of dubious trend stories from 2008: the vodka tampon "trend." If you missed that one, the story was that young women were getting drunk by using vodka soaked tampons. The idea was that they wouldn't have alcohol on their breath, or they would avoid stomach upset, or the vodka would hit the bloodstream more quickly. Or something. According to the Snopes urban legend website the story was floating around at least a decade before it erupted in the media in 2008. The low point was hit when Dr. Lisa Masterson on the daytime medical talk show The Doctors kept harping on how the practice would "destroy the vagina!" We'll stop here and not discuss the most dubious of these urban legend stories, the "anal beer bong trend."

Higher Rate of Birth Defects

2 The Dangers of Obesity During Pregnancy

Obesity can lead to diabetes, heart disease and premature death. Now evidence from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate it can harm unborn babies. About one in five women are obese when they become pregnant and medical records show that they have a higher incidence of Caesarean sections. Plus, their babies are at greater risk for birth defects and even death. Research indicates that babies born of obese women are three times more likely to die within the first month of life. The rate of still birth is much greater in obese women. Some NY hospitals are addressing the problem by buying longer surgical instruments, bigger beds, more sophisticated fetal testing monitors and are considering creating specialized centers staffed to provide emergency care for mothers and babies.

Dog Leads the Way to Detection

3 Dogs Can Smell Prostate Cancer

Dogs can smell prostate cancer in human urine, according to a new study. Some researchers believe many patients are treated unnecessarily because existing tests aren’t accurate enough. The dog enters the picture because some molecules affect the way urine smells and their enhanced noses can detect those changes. If these findings hold up in other studies, they could lead to more accurate tests that don’t require biopsies. The next steps in research are to find out exactly what the dogs smell and then create an “electronic nose” that can detect those same smells. For the study, two researchers spent a year training a Belgian Malinois shepherd. Five urine samples, one positive for prostate cancer, were placed in front of the dog, which correctly classified 63 out of 66 specimens.

Fewer Accidents, Safer Sex

4 Circumcision Can Prevent Sex-Related Injuries

"What kind of sex are these guys having? These injuries do not sound like normal sex that men in first world countries have. It's hard to assign credibily to studies about such abnormal behavior."
- Restoring Tally in the comments

A study finds that circumcised men are less likely to sustain cuts, abrasions and other minor injuries to the penis during sex. This also helps to explain why circumcision lowers the risk of HIV transmission. The study was led by Dr. Supriya D. Mehta from University of Illinnois at Chicago. Mehta and her colleagues used data from an HIV clinical trial in Africa where nearly 2,800 men were surveyed. The findings showed that circumcised men were 39 percent less likely to report any type of penile injuries during sex, compared to uncircumcised men. The findings also showed that circumcision can reduce a man's risk of HIV infection through heterosexual sex by up to 60 percent. Mehta's team wishes to look further into how penile injuries has a positive correlation in the transmission of HIV.

Rough Terrain's Bad for the Back

5 Mountain Bike Riding Increases Spinal Injuries

A new study suggests that mountain bike riding is as risky as football, diving and cheerleading when it comes to spinal injuries. Dr. Marcel Dvorak, of the University of British Columbia in Canada, found that one in six spinal injuries relating to mountain bike riding was severe enough to result in complete paralysis. Dvorak and his colleagues identified 107 patients who were treated after mountain biking accidents at British Columbia's primary spine center. Surgery was required for nearly two-thirds of the mountain bikers and 40 percent of those injuries involved the spinal cord. Dvorak explained that the majority of the injuries resulted from either being propelled over the handlebars or falling from great heights.

Stop Drinking from Shrek Glasses

6 McDonald's Shrek Glasses Contain Cadmium

McDonald's and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have recalled 12 million "Shrek Forever After 3D" collectible drinking glasses sold for around $2 each at the restaurant between May and June of this year. The designs on the glasses contain cadmium, which is toxic. Long-term exposure to cadmium can cause adverse health effects, such as increased risk of cancer. Four designs of the 16-ounce collectible glasses were sold: Shrek, Fiona, Puss n’ Boots and Donkey. McDonald's has said that consumers should immediately stop using the toxic glasses, and they're asking those affected by the recall to visit the McDonald's website for directions on obtaining a refund. The Office of Congresswoman Jackie Speier from California made CPSC aware of the cadmium issue with the glasses.
