Prescribed Too Often?

1 Resistance to Antibiotics Can Last Up to a Year

Resistance to antibiotics, recognized as a major threat to public health, can last up to a year according to a study published online in the British Medical Journal. Researchers found evidence that patients who were initially prescribed an antibiotic by their primary care physician for urinary tract or upper respiratory infections develop a resistance that was strongest in the first month following treatment but can last up to twelve months. However this is not a reason for clinicians to refrain from prescribing antibiotics or for patients to refuse to take them, say the study’s authors, even though the residual effect may contribute to high levels of resistance in the community. In the interest of public health, they suggest avoiding the initial use of antibiotics whenever possible.

Fear of Waking During Surgery

2 Survey Says Most Patients Anxious About Anesthesia

An overwhelming majority of surgical patients who participated in a survey reported anxiety about general anesthesia. While 17 percent said they were extremely anxious, 22 percent said they were quite anxious. Forty-six percent expressed some anxiety; 15 percent said they had none. Patient fears ran the gamut of dying while asleep to waking up during surgery. The survey, published in the May issue of the Journal of Advanced Nursing, highlights the need for the way information is imparted to patients, says Dr. Mark Mitchell, University of Salford, UK. He said that many patients are unaware of how general anesthesia works and, citing patient fears of waking during surgery, he added that misconceptions about general anesthesia need to addressed in order to reduce patient anxieties.

Get Healthy with Your IPhone

3 Improve Health with Apps and Text Messages

In 1997, B.J. Fogg imagined a world where mobile fitness devices could coach people, track locations, and show friends that were exercising at the same time. Though it was thought to be science fiction at the time, Fogg’s vision is a reality today. Both Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig have iPhone apps that assist people with their weight loss goals, focusing on the concept of breaking a long process into easily managed steps. Fogg suggests that mobile technology can help people with health goals by guiding them through these steps by creating habits and routines that can be maintained. He has organized a conference, Mobile Health 2010, which will be held at Stanford from today to Tuesday. Sponsors of the conference include the FDA and the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality.

Sex Doesn't Have to Be Casualty

4 A Heart Attack Doesn’t Have to Kill Your Sex Life

A heart attack shouldn’t kill your sex life, but it sometimes does. A new study suggests that doctors could change that. Many people who have had heart attacks are afraid sex could send them back to the hospital, or worse, but there’s only a small chance of that happening. According to Dr. Stacy Tessler Lindau, a gynecologist and sexuality researcher, “If you can walk up two flights of stairs or do moderate exercise, then it's OK to have sex," but most people aren’t getting this advice. The study consisted of 1,184 male and 576 female heart attack survivors. Results show that less than half the men and about a third of the women were given any advice from the hospital about resuming sex, with a smaller amount of patients discussing the subject with their doctors during the following year.

No ER Out-of-Network Nightmares

5 New Law Protects ER Patients

A new health law to go into effect in September protects patients in emergency situations from incurring extra costs from going to a hospital that's out of their insurance network. Thanks to the new the law, insurance companies are no longer allowed to pay less for ER care at hospitals with which they have no prior financial arrangements, reports MSNBC. The new law also prevents insurance companies from requiring prior authorization for ER care. According to MSNBC, the law also requires that health plans follow the "prudent layperson" rule, which means that a non-emergency at the ER will still be covered if the person went there with a situation that could have been an emergency (chest pain that ended up being indigestion).

New Hudson Is Size 6

6 Jennifer Hudson Loses with Weight Watchers

Formerly a size 16, Jennifer Hudson is now revealing her size 6 self, thanks to lots of hard work, her trainer Harley Pasternak and Weight Watchers. CNN reports that Jennifer Hudson lost the weight for a new role as Winnie Mandela in a movie that's shooting in South Africa. Hudson used Weight Watchers' point system to achieve her weight loss goals with portion control. Earlier this year, Hudson became the official spokesperson for Weight Watchers. Now that Hudson is eating food like the treat vetkoek available in South Africa, she's challenged with figuring out points, but CNN reports that Hudson's Weight Watchers counselor Liz Josefsberg isn't worried! She believes the "resilient" star will do fine in her new surroundings.

Public Smoking Dangerous

7 Nationwide Smoking Ban Would Save Millions

A nationwide smoking ban in public places would save more than $90 million in costs related to caring for heart attack patients, finds researchers at Henry Ford Hospital. The study also revealed that the smoking ban would significantly reduce hospitalizations for heart attacks. "When people smoke, they are not only harming themselves, they're harming those around them who are exposed to secondhand smoke," says Mouaz Al-Mallah, M.D. and lead author of the study. All but 13 states currently have a smoking ban in public places. After studying data from those 13 states, researchers found that a nationwide smoking ban could prevent 18,596 hospitalizations for heart attacks after the first year.
