Lower Your Voice

1 Research Shows Us How to Be Seductive

Physical signals, such as touching the face and direct eye contact, indicate physical attraction. Now, researchers tell us that lowering your voice may be another means of seduction. "We found that both sexes used a lower-pitch voice and showed a higher level of physiological arousal when speaking to a more attractive opposite-sex target," says Susan Hughes, Albright College, PA. Hughes studied 48 students for their vocal reactions to Skype messaging with a fictitious recipient and expected females to raise their voices when speaking to an attractive male. They found just the opposite - women manipulate their voices to sound breathier and lower-pitched, perhaps responding to a stereotype that husky voices are sexier. The study will be published in Journal of Nonverbal Behavior.

Regardless of Parents’ Intellect

2 Books in the Home Advance a Child’s Education

"Perhaps families with more books are more likely to emphasize education? It may have nothing to do with the books at all."
- Robert in the comments

One of the strongest predictors of attaining higher education is having books in the home, according to sociologist Maria Evans, U of Nevada, who led a 20-year study to learn what helps children succeed. Evans found that it wasn’t necessarily parents’ levels of education that predict academic success. Books in the homes of even the barely literate were found to further a child’s education by an average of 3.2 years. In fact, children of parents with less education had more to gain by having books in their homes. Findings indicate that the more books in the home, the greater the gain, but even as few as 20 books can go a long way towards helping a child succeed academically. "You get a lot of 'bang for your book'," says Evans of this relatively inexpensive way to boost a child’s education.

Measles Don't Like Budget Cuts

3 Measles Making a Rapid Comeback

Measle cases have rapidly increased recently in parts of Africa, Asian and some European countries according to the World Health Organization. The disease is easily avoidable with proper vaccinations, however funding for vaccination campaigns have been drastically cut since 2008, allowing the extremely contagious disease to spread after being nearly eradicated. Thankfully according to MSNBC Health, "Measles deaths among young children fell to 118,000 in 2008, compared with 1.1 million in 2000." The link between the disease and a lack of vaccinations was seen when the British people received false reports linking Measles vaccines to autism. Britain has reported 1,000 cases of measles in the last two years, a number 10 times higher than a decade earlier.

Chinese Exercise Reduces Stress

4 Tai Chi Good for Mental Health

Researchers say that Tai Chi, a Chinese low impact mind-body exercise, can reduce stress and depression while increasing self-esteem. Other benefits of Tai Chi include reduced anxiety and mood disturbances, but more randomized trials are needed. Dr. Chenchen Wang from Tufts University School of Medicine in Massachusetts, worked with other researchers to analyze results of 40 studies on the mental health effects of Tai Chi. Dr. Wang noted that Tai Chi has been practiced for centuries in the East and is now growing in popularity in the West. She said that more detailed knowledge on the physical and mental effects of Tai Chi exercise could lead to new approaches to treat chronic medical conditions and further explain mind-body medicine.

Two for One with Weight Watchers

5 Weight Watchers Reduces Diabetes Risk

Attending Weight Watchers meetings may not only help you lose weight, but it could also reduce your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, say researchers reporting their findings in American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine. The researchers believe that the 57 million Americans living with a condition known as "pre-diabetes" may benefit from Weight Watchers or another group weight loss program. After a six-month Weight Watchers group program, researchers observing overweight or obese adults found that the participants not only lost weight, but also experienced significantly reduced fasting glucose and insulin levels, which are indicators of diabetes risk. The study participates attended at least two thirds of the weekly sessions over the six-month period.

Laptap Dangers in Internet Cafes

6 Typhoid Adware May Lurk in Cafes

Computer science researchers from the University of Calgary share new findings on a potential computer security threat. It's called Typhoid adware, and is named after Typhoid Mary, who was identified as a healthy carrier of typhoid fever in the New York area in the early 1900s. "We're looking at a different variant of adware ... which we haven't seen out there yet, but we believe could be a threat soon," says John Aycock, co-author of a paper presented at the EICAR conference on IT security. Adware is software that enters computers when users download things, but researchers say that it requires an area where a non-encrypted wireless connection is shared. One solution proposed by the researchers is "telling" laptops they're in a cafe, making them suspicious of contact from other computers.
