Let Sleeping Babies Learn

1 Research Shows That Babies Learn While Sleeping

Newborn babies sleep about 16 to 18 hours per day yet learn to understand the world around them surprisingly quickly. Now, new research from the University of Florida finds that newborns are not merely sleeping. They are learning, according to Dana Byrd, member of the research team that conducted the study that appears in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. “Newborn infants' sleep patterns are quite different than those of older children or adults in that they show more active sleep where heart and breathing rates are very changeable," she said. "It may be this sleep state is more amenable to experiencing the world in a way that facilitates learning." Study results may lead to the identification of newborns at risk for developmental disorders such as dyslexia and autism.

Kids Don't Affect Divorce

2 Divorce Not More Common in Autism Families

Despite the commonly held belief that couples with an autistic child end up getting divorced, a new study reveals that divorce rates aren't more common in this group, CNN reports. According to the study findings from Kennedy Krieger Institute in Maryland, 64 percent of children with an autism spectrum disorder are part of a family with married parents. In comparison, 65 percent of children without autism have parents who are married. The research will be presented at the International Meeting for Autism Research in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The study, led by Brian Freedman of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders at Kennedy Krieger Institute, is based on almost 78,000 kids in the 2007 National Survey of Children's Health.

Gluten, Casein Blamed by Parents

3 Low Gluten Autism Diet Trials Show No Benefit

While diet changes are frequently recommended for improving symptoms of autism, a new study doesn't support the idea. A University of Rochester study found that taking gluten and casein out of the diets of autistic kids had no impact on behavior, sleep or bowel patterns. Researchers call the study the "most controlled diet research in autism to date." To ensure that observed changes were due to dietary alterations, researchers controlled for what type of behavioral treatments children received. However, researchers also noted that the small study didn't include children with significant gastrointestinal disease. They say that it's possible such children and certain other groups could see a benefit from diet changes.

Free Outside Gym for Seniors

4 New Playground for the Elderly in London

Hyde Park is home to London's first "playground" for seniors over 60 years old, reports MSNBC. The park for seniors opened after area residents campaigned for a facility to help seniors get fit. It features six low-impact fitness machines, including a sit-up bench. The play area, which was designed to offer a free experience without the intimidation of gyms, appears to be a success with seniors lining up to try out the new equipment. The park, which allows seniors to socialize while getting fit, is modeled after play areas for older people in other countries in Europe. While a sign at the park will read "Hyde Park Senior Playground," people of any age may use the equipment.

Mean Metal Found in Jewelry

5 Miley Cyrus Jewelry at Walmart May Be Toxic

According to tests performed for the Associated Press, the Miley Cyrus line of jewelry sold exclusively at Walmart contains high levels of a toxic ingredient, the metal cadmium. Miley Cyrus is the star of Hannah Montana. Oddly, Walmart may have known about the toxic metal in the jewelry in February, but refused to stop selling the jewelery. However, hours after AP's findings were reported, Walmart said it would pull the Miley Cyrus jewelry from shelves for now so that they can investigate the matter. Long-term exposure to the toxic metal cadmium, which is a carcinogen, can bring on bone softening and kidney failure. The metal may also interfere with brain development in very young kids.

Play Wii to Get Skinny

6 Nintendo Teams Up with Heart Association

Nintendo and the American Heart Association (AHA) have teamed up to help fight the growing obesity problem in the United States, reports Yahoo! News. Nintendo and AHA are promoting the popular Wii consoles as a means to help fight obesity and lower the risk of heart disease for Americans. The AHA logo will appear on Nintendo's active-play video game products, such as the Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit and Wii. Nintendo is hoping that the healthy partnership will help boost declining sales of Wii products, and AHA is hoping that the games will help people reach their recommended goal of 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week.

Slim Down to Stay Sane

7 Middle Age Belly Fat Risk for Dementia

Having extra abdominal fat during middle age could put you at greater risk for developing dementia later, say researchers from Boston University School of Medicine. "Our findings, while preliminary, provide greater understanding of the mechanisms underlying the link between obesity and dementia," said Dr. Sudha Seshadri. For the study, published in Annals of Neurology, researchers analyzed the link between waist circumference, Body Mass Index (BMI), waist to hip ratio and measures of abdominal fat from a CT with MRI measures of total brain volume and more in middle-aged study participants. Researchers say the results confirmed the association of increasing BMI with lower brain volumes in middle-aged and older adults.

Traditional Folk Remedy Works

8 Daily Ginger Intake Eases Exercise Muscle Pain

Ginger root, a common folk remedy for colds and upset stomachs, has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in mouse studies, but now researchers from the University of Georgia have found that it can also reduce muscle pain caused by exercise. Both raw and heat-treated ginger capsules were used in two separate 11-day studies involving 34 and 40 volunteers respectively. The capsules contained two grams of ginger. On the eighth day of the study, the participants performed elbow flexor extensions with a heavy weight. The groups were then evaluated on arm function, inflammation, and pain. Those who received daily ginger supplementation had 25% less exercise-induced pain. The effect was not enhanced or diminished by heat-treating the ginger.
