Homeless Hit Men

1 Calorie Commando TV Host in Murder-for-Hire Scheme

In a story that reads like the script of the upcoming movie Machete, Santa Monica police arrested former Food Network cooking show host Juan-Carlos Cruz on charges of soliciting a homeless man to murder his wife for hire. The beachfront Los Angeles-area city of Santa Monica is a mecca for Southern California homeless. According to TMZ, Cruz offered $1,000 to "Little Dave" to kill his wife with a box cutter, which Cruz supplied. Little Dave brought in "Shane" and "Big Dave," but Big Dave spilled the beans to the cops when arrested on separate charges. In addition to hosting the Food Network show Calorie Commando, Cruz was the pastry chef at Hotel Bel Air in Los Angeles, promoted low-calorie cooking, and authored The Juan-Carlos Cruz Calorie Countdown Cookbook.

2 Retired Dog Fight Pitbull on Viagra

A heartworm afflicted pitbull in New York named Ingrid is being kept alive thanks to Viagra pills donated by anonymous, flacid male fans. Ingrid has had a hard life. Formerly a bait dog used to incite dog fights, she was then abandoned to a life tied to a fence. Diagnosed with heartworm, a severe heart condition, and 14 pounds of abdominal fluid, the veterinarian suggested Viagra as a last-chance solution. The Viagra has opened up Ingrid's blocked heart vessels, allowing her blood to circulate more freely and improve her abdominal edema. Caregiver Jodi Record solicits the Viagra from donors and says, "If every man in America that has Viagra sends one pill to Ingrid that will be keeping her alive for several years." Shelter workers are seeking a permanent home for Ingrid.

Positive Minds Interesting Too

3 Scientists Study Healthy Minds

The Dalai Lama asked neuroscientist Richard Davidson why researchers focus on anxiety or fear so much and hardly ever study positive qualities of the healthy mind like happiness, reports AP on Yahoo! News. Davidson decided the Dalai Lama had a point, and they partnered to help build a scientific connection between Buddhist practices like meditation and western science. The Dalai Lama even indicated he'll give up any part of his religion that's contradicted by science. The Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which will feature a meditation room next to a brain imaging laboratory, opens this weekend. At the center, more than 12 researchers will embark on studies of the science of positive qualities of mind.

Mystery Weight Gain among Rich

4 Rich Canadian Men Fatter

In most of the world, fat increases as wealth decreases, but in Canada men are more likely to be fat if they're wealthy. According to a new study led by graduate student Nathalie Dumas at the University of Montreal, wealthy men in Canada have an increased likelihood of being fat with each extra dollar they make. The wealth and fat correlation for women in Canada is less clear. "Since the 1980s, the greatest increase in obesity levels has been among rich Canadian and Korean men," notes Dumas. While the study didn't determine why wealthy Canadian men tend to be overweight, Dumas says that one possible explanation is dining out more frequently, as well as decreased physical activity. She comments that people who dine out often consume more calories and larger amounts of alcohol.

A Better Hamburger Day

5 Safer Ground Beef in Schools This Fall

Thanks to new guidelines, parents may feel more comfortable with hamburger day in school cafeterias next school year. The Agriculture Department recently revealed that the government is implementing tougher standards for ground beef purchased for schools. Beginning in July, new standards will require that producers perform contamination tests more often, reports MSNBC. Also, beef producers won't be able to use certain trimmings. In addition, the USDA is going to ban purchase of beef produced on the same day that E. coli O157 or salmonella is discovered in tests at a plant. The National Academy of Sciences is expected to review the beef purchases made by the government.

6 Difficult Life of Supertasters

Supertasters are unlucky enough to have a taste bud density that's 10 to 100 times greater than a normal person. While you may think that sounds great, many supertasters say life's difficult. According to a recent article in "The Body Odd" section of MSNBC, supertasters can't stand coffee, alcohol, strawberries, tomatoes, Parmesan cheese, condiments and many sweets! Supertasters have the ability to taste components in food like salt or bitterness that others don't detect. Since they can taste very mild flavors and are sensitive to spicy foods, supertasters may prefer blander foods like turkey. More women than men are likely to be supertasters, and it's also believed that the condition, which affects 25 percent of the US population, is genetic.

UK Doctors Dislike Homeopathy

7 Homeopathy Called Witchcraft

"Of course it is witchcraft, but so what? Witchcraft works, if you believe that it will work. And unlike traditional medicine it won't kill you if it doesn't work."
- Bill in the comments

Hundreds of members of the British Medical Association (BMA), who believe that taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for remedies with no supporting scientific basis, passed a motion denouncing alternative medicine, reports the UK's Telegraph. Junior doctors voted to support a ban on homeopathy, including ending placements for trainee doctors who teach homeopathic principles. The deputy chairman of the BMA's junior doctors committee even went so far as call homeopathy "witchcraft." The motion won't become official policy of the BMA as a whole unless it receives support at a conference next month. Homeopathy, developed by German physician Samuel Hahnemann, is built upon the theory that substances causing symptoms in a well person can cure the same symptoms in a sick person if diluted.

Soda Is Good for Something

8 Diet Soda Reduces Kidney Stones

"Just realize that what you are drinking is not 'food' in any sense of the word but a chemical simulacrum masquerading as food and initially banned by the FDA"
- Philip in the comments

People prone to kidney stones could benefit from drinking a moderate amount of diet soda, say researchers from the University of California, San Francisco. Researchers credit the citrate and malate in many diet sodas with inhibiting development of calcium stones. They measured the citrate and malate in 15 popular diet sodas, and Diet Sunkist Orange and Diet 7-Up were among the best bets for reducing kidney stones due to their content. Research findings were shared at the 104th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA). AUA spokesman Anthony Y. Smith, MD, said that the study suggests that those with kidney stone disease who don't typically drink diet soda could benefit from moderate amounts.

Gas Station Odor in the Gulf

9 Why the Oil Spill Smells

Residents near the Gulf oil spill may notice an unpleasant smell, which can become stronger with weather or wind changes. The CDC says that the smell is similar to what you can detect at a gas station, and it comes from Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that are present in the oil. However, you can detect the VOCs at levels below what may cause illness. According to the CDC, low levels of VOCs may cause headaches, upset stomach and irritation of the skin, throat, nose and eyes. People with asthma may be especially sensitive to inhaling VOCs. For residents in the area of the oil spill, the CDC recommends staying indoors and closing windows and doors to limit exposure to VOCs.
