Voices Carry

1 Coma Victims May Be Helped by Familiar Voices

"Every 21 seconds, we have a new head injury and about one-third of those will be severe,” says Theresa Pape, leader of a clinical trial investigating whether repeated exposure to familiar voices can help repair damaged brain networks in coma victims. Pape hopes the study will answer not only the most common question, “Can he hear me?” but also “Are familiar voices therapeutic?” and can they heal damaged brains? Pape uses MRIs to track participants’ brain reactions to familiar voices, which are played through headphones at regular intervals. Although trial data has yet to be completed and analyzed, at least one participant’s family has seen a remarkable improvement in their son who, three weeks after his entrance into the trial program, began to respond to outside stimuli.

A Dangerous Trend

2 Hookah Smoking on Rise among North American Youth

Even as some research indicates that fewer people are smoking cigarettes each year, a new and dangerous smoking trend that appeals to many young adults is on the rise, according to a new study published in the journal Pediatrics. Waterpipes, also known as hookahs and shishas, are fast becoming the vice of choice among young North Americans who may be under the misperception that they are safer than cigarettes. Not so, says senior investigator Jennifer O’Loughlin who cautions that “... waterpipe smoke contains nicotine, carbon monoxide, carcinogens and may contain greater amounts of tar and heavy metals than cigarette smoke.” The study of 871 people, ages 18 to 24, found that 23 percent had used a waterpipe in the last 12 months.

Lower Triglycerides Too

3 Study: Eating Nuts Lowers Cholesterol 5 Percent

Adding nuts to your diet can lower cholesterol according to a study in a recent issue of Archives of Internal Medicine. For the study, participants ate an average of 2.4 ounces of nuts per day resulting in a reduction of slightly more than five percent of total cholesterol; a 7.4 percent reduction in LDL, or unhealthy cholesterol, and a 10.2 percent reduction of triglycerides among participants with high levels. Explained Joan Sabaté, M.D., Dr.P.H., of Loma Linda University, CA, "The lipid-lowering effects of nut consumption were greatest among subjects with high baseline LDL-C and with low body mass index and among those consuming Western diets.” She called for the inclusion of nuts in the diet to favorably affect blood lipid levels and to potentially lower coronary heart disease risk.

Tech and Health

4 IPhone That Can Detect Your Mood in a Heartbeat

Apple's recent patent shows a heart rate monitor embedded into an iPhone. The heart sensor-like technology will be able to seamlessly identify the user by his/her heart beat and even able to detect their mood. You probably know by now that everyone has different fingerprints. But did you know that each individual also has a unique heartbeat? Apple taps into this biometric technology so that the iPhone can simply authenticate the user as you as you pick up the phone, rather than requiring passwords or complicated face or fingerprint scans. By monitoring your heartbeats, the device will also be able to tell how you're feeling, what you've been eating and if you've just come back from a jog.

Handy Treatment

5 Therapy Via Telephone Helps with Depression

A new Brigham Young University (BYU) study has found that treating clinical depression over the telephone is almost as effective as in-person treatment. Diane Spangler, a psychology professor at BYU, said that telephone therapy is more user-friendly and flexible. However, phone therapy for clinical depression may not be best for all patients. A third of eligible study participants decided not to forgo face-to-face therapy for phone therapy. For those who participated in phone therapy, calls lasted from 21 to 52 minutes, and therapy was similar to in-person treatment. At six-month follow-up, 50 percent of patients who received in-person therapy had recovered from depression, compared to 42 percent of patients who received phone therapy.

More Than Just Heart Disease

6 High Cholesterol Linked to Cancer Risk

Having high cholesterol is not only a risk factor for heart disease and stroke, but is also increasingly being linked to a higher risk for the onset and progression of several cancers. A new study from researchers in Portugal have shown that high levels of cholesterol can affect the microenvironment of the bone marrow, causing more cells to be released into the circulating blood. As cholesterol empties from the marrow, the researchers propose that it creates more space for malignant leukemia cells to enter, expand, and spread to secondary organs. Cholesterol also interferes with bone marrow transplant, making the patient less receptive to the treatment. The study is the first to link cholesterol with bone marrow cell mobilization and will appear in the journal Blood.
