Pinprick Surgery for Ritual

1 U.S. Pediatricians Back Fake Female Circumcision

In an effort to prevent immigrant parents of daughters from taking them overseas to be undergo ritual genital cutting, the American Academy of Pediatrics has proposed that a "pinprick" operation be approved for use in the United States. The operation, under local anesthesia, would prick the genital area of girls to produce a drop of blood, without removing tissue, in the hope that this would be sufficient to satisfy cultural and religious ceremonial requirements. Female genital cutting is practiced in many equatorial African countries and Egypt. The AAP panel that produced the recommendation heard from concerned physicians who said that the procedure would discourage parents from taking their daughters overseas for extreme and mutilating operations without anesthesia or sterilization.

Promoting Midwifery

2 Waterbirth: Woman to Give Birth Live on Internet

Shawna, a San Bernardino County (Calif.) area woman, will give birth to her second child, a daughter, live on the internet on or around May 24. The stunt is motivated by Shawna and her husband Ernie's concern that birth center birthing is not getting the respect it deserves. "My wife and I are very concerned about the increasing C-section rate in our community, how almost every labor is now induced with drugs, and how women in our families and our community have been scared into unnecessary epidurals and surgeries," says Ernie. In addition, the couple is not happy that insurance companies make it hard to get adequate reimbursement if mothers choose to use a midwife and birth center. Interested parties can register online to view Shawna's live birth.

Patients Carry the Burden

3 Patients Recognize Acupuncture; Insurers Don't

A growing number of people are turning to acupuncture for treatment, although most insurance companies don’t provide coverage for it. According to a 2007 survey by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 3.1 million adults reported using acupuncture in the previous 12 months, up from 2.1 million in a 2002 survey. Western doctors are beginning to embrace acupuncture, sometimes sending patients to be treated for conditions like chronic headaches, osteoarthritis, depression related to pregnancy, and lower back pain, but insurers have been reluctant to cover the treatment. Patients who would like to try acupuncture are advised to try a few things: check to see if your insurer covers it, try a school for discounted treatment, or use your insurer’s flex spending account.

Hedgehog Fruit a Hit

4 Fruit in Fun Shapes More Appealing to Kids

While snacking on fruit instead of sugary processed foods could help ward off obesity in children, the question is how to get kids to eat more fruit. A new study in the journal Appetite revealed that kids will consume more fruit if it's presented in a fun way, such as in the shape of a hedgehog! According to BBC, kids in the study consumed nearly twice as much fun-shaped fruit as plain cubed fruit, even though they understood that both options should taste the same. Researchers believe that supermarkets may be able to use their findings to present innovative fruit options that might be more appealing to children. However, they warn that the same fun fruit presentations could begin to lose appeal if overused.

Advantages of Coconut Water

5 Coconut Water As Sports Drink

Fat-free coconut water, taken from unripe coconuts, has plenty of the electrolyte potassium and few calories, but does that make it a good sports drink? Washington Post recently took up the question. They report that coconut water, now available in Bikram studios, is a fine drink if you like the taste, but it's not a miracle beverage. Coconut water is lower in calories than Gatorade and juice. It has more potassium than a banana, and that's a good thing for regulating blood pressure. However, Washington Post notes that most people don't exercise heavily enough to require a sports recovery drink. While coconut water does have some advantages over plain water or higher-calorie drinks like Gatorade, most people probably don't truly need to utilize it as a sports drink.

Robot Helpers in the Kitchen

6 Domestic Robot Safety Tested

The age of robots helping humans around the house may not be so far away, but will it be safe? Three researchers from the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics at the German aerospace agency studied how dangerous robots could be to humans if they helped with everyday domestic tasks. Their findings are a bit alarming. In some cases, when the robot arm used sharp tools like knives or scissors near substances that mimic soft tissue, the arm managed to accidentally inflict potentially lethal wounds! However, potential injuries were reduced when the prototype collision detection system, created by the researchers, was switched on. The results of the robot safety tests were presented recently at the 2010 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation in Alaska.

Freud Was Right

7 Mom’s Emotional Abuse Is Damaging to Children

Good mothering is critical for the healthy development of children. Unfortunately, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 56 percent of all child abusers are women. The most common form of abuse is psychological. Dr. Philip Muskin of Columbia University says that “Neglect and emotional abuse are every bit as damaging as sexual abuse.” Constant criticism or withholding affection affects academic achievement, social growth, and self-worth, even into adulthood. The most vulnerable years are during infancy and toddlerhood, when mom is the primary nurturer. Learning to move forward from a painful past is difficult, but not impossible. The key is to get social support from others early.
