Tiger Woods Infidelity Prank

1 Gatorade 'Artist' Gets 2 Years Probation

Prankster Jason Eric Kay (38) was sentenced to 2 years probation and fined $1,000 for switching labels on Gatorade sports drink bottles. Kay, a self styled Andy Warhol style artist, had swapped his labels for the originals on a few dozen bottles of Gatorade at Boulder area supermarkets. Kay's labels included a photo of Tiger Woods and his wife Elin Woods next to the word "Unfaithful." The government did not accuse Kay of tampering with the contents of the bottles, and there is no clear law against pranks or art projects, but because Kay put labels for Tropical Mango Gatorade on another flavor of Gatorade, and because the label incorrectly indicated vitamin C content, the feds determined the prank violated misbranding laws. How was the artist tracked down? He put his e-mail on the labels.

Affects Brain Development

2 Fetal Exposure to Smoking May Cause Psych Problems

It’s been established that smoking while pregnant can result in health issues for newborns, including low birth weight, respiratory disease and ear infections. A new Finnish study shows that maternal smoking may also cause long-term psychiatric problems that can manifest themselves in childhood and early adulthood. "Recent studies show that maternal smoking during pregnancy may interfere with brain development of the growing fetus," said lead author Mikael Ekblad. "By avoiding smoking during pregnancy, all the later psychiatric problems caused by smoking exposure could be prevented." These problems include an increased risk for depression, attention deficit disorder and addiction. Maternal smoking is still common despite knowledge of its detrimental effects on health.

Is Dementia Contagious?

3 Spouses of Dementia Patients Face Risk of Dementia

Researchers have learned that spouses of dementia patients have an increased risk of developing dementia themselves. While the cause is unknown, it has been suggested that the stress, exhaustion, and poor dietary habits that go along with caring for a loved one could be contributing factors. Studies have shown that new mothers struggling with irregular feeding schedules can exhibit mild memory loss, but the symptoms are usually temporary because babies adjust to schedules, allowing sleep patterns and exhaustion to reverse themselves. Caring for a spouse with dementia doesn’t allow stress factors to lower, which could result in chronic distress. Chronic distress can affect parts of the brain, specifically the hippocampus, which is known to suffer from shrinkage in patients with dementia.

Pioneers of Stem Cell Research

4 Stem Cell Treatment Used on First Human Patients

Imagine having your back cut open in the name of science. John Cornick, 51, did more than imagine it. Cornick, who has Lou Gehrig's disease, volunteered for a clinical trial that would make him one of the first three humans to receive stem cell treatment. While Cornick was hopeful about the outcome, he was also realistic. “Well, of course you'd like to get up and walk ... but I know that's not going to happen." The purpose of this phase was to establish safety, determining if fetal stem cells can safely be injected into the spinal cord. Dr. Jonathan Glass, director of Emory's ALS center, says that Cornick and the two previous patients in the trial are heroes because, at this point, the trial will likely produce only information, not results.

New Diapers May Cause Rashes

7 Parents Say New Pampers Dry Max Diapers Dangerous

"Any baby can get a rash from any diaper, and no diaper is perfect for all babies. If you think the diaper is causing a problem, change the brand of the diaper."
- NickG in the comments

Some parents are claiming that new Pampers diapers with Dry Max are causing diaper rashes and even chemical burns on babies. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is investigating the claims and discussing the concerns with Procter & Gamble Co. The new Dry Max feature used in Swaddlers and Cruisers is said to be the biggest diaper innovation in 25 years, but some concerned parents aren't buying it. The new diapers were first sold to parents in the United States in March. MSNBC reports that many parents have joined a Facebook group called "Pampers bring back the OLD CRUISERS/SWADDLERS." Members of the Facebook group claim that the diaper rash problems didn't begin until they started using the new Swaddlers and Cruisers with Dry Max.

Weed Approved in Washington, DC

8 DC Approves Medical Marijuana

The District of Columbia Council approved a measure allowing patients suffering from certain chronic illnesses to receive two ounces per month of medical marijuana from city-regulated dispensaries. The vote was unanimous. New York Times reports that the medical marijuana amount allowed per patient each month may be moved up by the mayor to four ounces without further council action. Patients with glaucoma, cancer, HIV and other chronic illnesses may soon be prescribed medical marijuana in the District of Columbia. Medical marijuana is believed to help with side effects from chemotherapy. For glaucoma patients, marijuana can lower eye pressure. As long as federal lawmakers don't object, DC will join the 14 states that currently allow marijuana for medical purposes.
