1 Keep Unserved Food off the Table to Eat Less

Avoiding temptation could be key to losing weight. A group of researchers led by Brian Wansink, the director of the Cornell Food and Brand Lab, concluded that consuming less food during meals may be as easy as keeping serving dishes on the stove or counter, away from the dining table. Findings from the study were presented recently at the Experimental Biology conference in California. "When we kept the serving dishes off the table, people ate 20% fewer calories. Men ate close to 29% less," said Wansink, author of Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think. Wansink also noted that the same method can be employed to help you eat healthier foods. Keep fruits handy and cakes hidden!

Antidepressant Effect

2 Depressed People Eat More Chocolate

The results may not be very surprising, but a recent study has found a link between symptoms of depression and chocolate intake. The study of 931 men and women, screened positive for depression but not on medication, found that those who had severe depression consumed an average of 11.8 servings of chocolate per month, compared to 8.4 servings for those less depressed, although no other dietary pattern was noticed. A control group of non-depressed patients only ate 5.4 servings of chocolate per month. The women in the study were more likely to consume chocolate than men. The published paper references a 2008 animal study that found that chocolate offers an antidepressant effect by triggering either brain chemicals or a hormone mechanism, according to the research team.
