1 Navy Submarine Smoking Ban Effective Next Year

Unbelievably, cigarette smoking is allowed on the Navy's claustrophobic nuclear submarines, where 150 sailors squeeze into a space the size of a three-bedroom house for months at a time. But as of the last day of this year smoking will be completely banned on submarines, according to a report in the Washington Post. The Navy is offering sailors smoking cessation programs in preparation for the ban. Former "bubblehead" James Mason worries that the ban will remove one of the few stress relieving coping methods available to sailors, which also include man hugs, rear-end patting, and stripping of first-timers to their underwear when the equator is crossed. In addition to the ban on smoking, the Navy is planning to integrate women and openly homosexual sailors into submarine crews.

2 Calcium Supplements May Lower Breast Cancer Risk

Results of a study presented at the American Association for Cancer Research find that vitamins and calcium supplements may reduce a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. Researcher Jaime Matta, Ph.D., professor in the Ponce School of Medicine, Puerto Rico, believes that supplements enhance DNA’s ability to repair itself, a process that, if inhibited, can lead to cancer. “When the DNA is not repaired, it leads to a mutation that leads to cancer,” explains Matta whose research indicates that vitamin supplements resulted in a 30 percent reduction of developing cancer while calcium supplements reduced the risk of developing the disease by about 40 percent. The effects are not immediate but mega doses are not required to experience a beneficial result.

Depression Meds Got You Down?

3 Depression Drug Side Effects Not Reported

Patients who stop taking depression medication often blame it on side effects such as weight gain and sexual dysfunction. However, a new Rhode Island Hospital study published in the Journal of Psychiatry, indicates that psychiatrists often don’t document patient complaints about side effects. For the study, participants filled out questionnaires which were then compared with their psychiatrists’ documentations. It was found that patient complaints occurred at a rate of about 20 times higher than those recorded by their doctors. Said lead researcher Mark Zimmerman, MD, director of outpatient psychiatry, "[W]e believe that ongoing dialogue about side effects during treatment will help to reduce premature medication discontinuation and would help reduce depression relapse rates.”

Improve Memory with Dreams

4 New Study Reveals That Dreams Improve Memory

A new study suggests that a nap may boost the ability to process and store information, but only if you dream. According to Dr. Robert Stickgold, author of the study, the brain processes information when you dream, looking for connections that might not be thought of when awake. In the study, 99 college students memorized a maze on a computer. They were then placed inside a virtual version of the maze and asked to navigate around. After doing this several times, half of the participants took a 90-minute nap while the other half stayed awake and watched videos. When the students were given the maze test again five hours later, the nappers did better than the students who had stayed awake. However, the nappers who dreamed about the maze performed 10 times better than those who didn't.
