1 Taste-Testing KFC's Double Down

The brave folks at the "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" blog recently tried KFC's new Double Down ... uh, sandwich? They describe it as a bacon sandwich in which the bacon has been replaced with chicken -- either fried or grilled -- along with a couple of slices of what looks like pepper jack cheese. We're not sure if the nutritional information is for a whole sandwich, but KFC says the regular Double Down has 540 calories, 32 grams of fat, 10 of which are saturated, while the grilled version has 460 calories, 23 grams of fat and 9 grams saturated, but you do get more salt for the fat "bargain." Commentators describe the meal as "a triumph of nature," "not as repulsive as I thought it would be" and "an Al Queda plot."

Cut Alzheimer’s Risk

2 Eat Heart Healthy Food for a Healthy Brain

A heart-healthy diet may have a direct effect on your risk for developing Alzheimer’s, according to Dr. Nikolaos Scarmeas and fellow researchers from Columbia University who recommend eating a Mediterranean-style diet of foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fruits, vegetables and lean protein. Scarmeas followed more than 2000 dementia-free adults and found that those who regularly followed this type of diet were 38 percent less likely to develop Alzheimer’s over the next four years. Heart disease is a risk factor for Alzheimer’s and, although Scarmeas could not prove a causal relationship between diet and the incidence of Alzheimer’s, he said a diet rich in folate, vitamin E and Omega-3 fatty acids may affect the accumulation of beta amyloid, a characteristic of Alzheimer’s.

Dieting Alone Won’t Do It

3 Diet & Exercise Required for Major Weight Loss

Evidence from researchers at Oregon Health & Science U indicates that dieting alone does not result in significant weight loss. Scientists believe this is due to the body’s compensatory mechanism of reducing its level of physical activity when caloric intake is reduced. For the study, primates ate high fat diets for several years and then were placed on calorie reduced diets while scientists tracked their activity levels. While there was no significant weight loss while on the low fat diet, the monkeys’ activity levels were dramatically reduced. The scientists, writing in the American Journal of Physiology - Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, believe this is due to the body’s natural reaction of reducing activity levels in response to reduced caloric intake.

Carbs Up Women's Heart Risk

4 Carbs May Boost Women's Heart Disease Risk

Consuming white bread, pizza or white rice, as well as other foods rich in certain carbohydrates, can double a woman's risk of developing heart disease. According to new research published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, carb-rich foods with a high glycemic index like white bread cause blood sugar to spike and may harm the heart if you're female. Since men process carbs differently, they don't appear have the same risk of heart disease when consuming foods with a high glycemic index like pizza. Carbs with a low glycemic index, such as fruit and pasta, weren't associated with an increased risk of heart disease since they're absorbed by the body less rapidly. The study was conducted in Italy, where carb-rich foods like pizza, bread and pasta are consumed often.

We Don't See Well When Jealous

5 Jealousy Affects Vision

Jealousy can actually affect what you see! Psychology professors from the University of Delaware found that women in a lab experiment were unable to detect targets on the computer and ignore unpleasant images at the same time if they were jealous. The research was featured in Emotion, a journal published by the American Psychological Association. For the experiment, jealousy was evoked when a woman's romantic partner sitting nearby was asked to rate the attractiveness of other single women. After questioning the women, professors found that those feeling the most jealous were so distracted by the unpleasant images they were unable to see the targets. The experiments only tested the sight and jealousy association among women. It's not known at this time whether men would react the same way.
