1 Weird Sleep: Exploding Head Syndrome, Sexsomnia

Sleep for most people is relaxing and refreshing, but for a cursed few it can be a nightmare, literally. Stephanie Pappas of LiveScience writes at MSNBC about 10 weird sleep disorders, including nightmare disorder, night terrors, REM behavior disorder, and nocturnal sleep-related eating disorder. Sexsomnia is a disorder in which the patient makes loud sexual moans during sleep, and may even violently masturbate or commit rape while asleep. Exploding Head Syndrome is a disorder in which a person on the brink of deep sleep is awaken by a loud noise sounding like cymbals or explosives detonating right next to his head. The cause of EHS is unknown, but it's thought to be harmless.

2 Pain Should Be Considered a Disease

Health experts say that chronic pain should be considered a disease in its own right, and that labeling it as such might lead to more research and treatments. In the UK, it's estimated that about 8 million people suffer from chronic pain but only about 2 percent see a specialist to do anything about it. Pain is the second most common reason people list for not working by people seeking disability benefits there. Experts say pain is difficult to treat, in part because there isn't always an underlying cause that can be found and eliminated. There also aren't a lot of new drugs or treatment options for pain, and sometimes people don't seek help because there's a feeling that suffering can be a benefit or that people shouldn't complain about pain.

3 Manure Management Becomes Messy

Legislation to control pollution from man made sources has gone a long way towards cleaning up and preventing contamination in our air and water supplies. While there’s more to be done, we face a new threat from a common and natural source - animal manure. As the shift in agriculture moves from smaller to mega farms, the amount of waste becomes not only unmanageable but also toxic to the environment. The runoff from animal manure pollutes our streams and rivers. As it dries in the air, it produces a dust that contributes to climate change. The government’s push to pass legislation is stymied by agricultural groups that say new rules could crush small farmers and put them out of business. New EPA restrictions went into effect in December, but more has to be done on local levels.

Fast Food Fizzles

4 Recession Takes a Bite out of Breakfast Sales

As unemployment rates rise and fewer people race out the door each morning to their jobs, the fast food industry is experiencing a falling off in the sale of breakfast foods, despite increases in sales in other areas, according to an article in The Washington Post. Prior to the recession, fast food breakfast sales was one of the fastest growing segments of the food industry, according to the consumer behavior research firm, NPD Group. But this past fall, breakfast sales were down about four percent as unemployment rates hit double digits. Fast food breakfast sales are not the only segment of the market that is suffering. As more Americans eat their meals at home, the restaurant industry, including fast food sellers, is watching sales drop off at a steady rate.

Regular Routine is Best

5 Exercise Helps Anxious Patients

Regular exercise can help reduce anxiety in patients, according to a new study conducted at the University of Georgia and published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. In clinical trials involving 3000 patients, researchers said that those who exercised regularly reported a 20 percent reduction in anxiety. Matthew Herring, lead author of the study and a doctoral student in the department of kinesiology at UGA said that exercise is known to alleviate symptoms of depression but that its affect on patients with anxiety is less documented. “Our findings add to the growing body of evidence that physical activities such as walking or weight lifting may turn out to be the best medicine that physicians can prescribe to help their patients feel less anxious,” he said.
